I had this book in the 1990s and had to give it away when I moved into a much smaller place and was making a lot less money. Now that I'm retired I've begun rebuilding what had been a fabulous library of source-texts about religion along the Silk Road. This book is an absolute must for someone seeking to understand the intertwining evolution of Manichaeism and "Orthodox Christianity." I must be at pains to say that "Orthodox Christianity" as I use the term is the generally-accepted description of those churches not affiliated with Rome in the West and after Islam began making incursions into Palestine and ancient Anatolia, several of the bishoprics - Antioch, Merv, Malabar - were separated from the Greek church which held on in Constantinople and Athens. (The Alexandrian see had become the Coptic Church). Not only did the church in the East have to deal with things like the Nestorian heresy and a predatory Zoroastrianism, they had the followers of the prophet Mani to deal with. The historical result is that some of these groups were Manichaean, others were more or less orthodox, while a third became heavily influenced by ideas from farther afield such as Mahayana Buddhism and Taoism. Professor Klimkeits' book presents material from the Manichaeans, almost all of which had been the provenance of specialists like W B Henning and Mary Boyce. You literally had to dig through vast library stacks to find the books and journal articles published by Henning, Boyce and others; Klimkeits' book spares the reader this digging and presents beautifully annotated selections from the vast Central Asian corpus.

Hans-Joachim Klimkeit is a leading scholar in Manichaeism and the religious history of Central Asia. A more accurate title for the book would of been 'Manichean texts of Central Asia' because this book covers religious, theological, devotional, and historical texts. Most of the languages of the texts are originally from Sogdian, Parthian, Old Turkic, And Chinese texts translated into English. My only complaint is how the book tried to advertise itself by claiming to be a Eastern Nag Hammadi version. Along with that the jacket of the book attempts to portray Manichaeism as a Christian Gnostic group. This is wildly inaccurate as Manichaeism derives not just from Christian Gnostic groups but also from Mandaism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Buddhism and ancient native religions that existed during the Sassanid Empire. Overall, a affordable book that contains as much information as Andrew Welburn's standard on Manichean texts but with a much lower price.

This was a wonderful collection of Manichean texts from Asia. I bought and read this book after reading Manichean Texts from the Roman Empire. The two books go nicely together!

I require this book as part of the curriculum for my 85 hour prenatal yoga teacher training. I chose this book because of it's ability to educate students in the basics of Ayurveda during pregnancy. I think that the author did a great job synthesizing some very complex material into layman's terms. My trainees always really enjoy this book. I think the postpartum section could be a bit more comprehensive.

There were many tips from this book that I used in my pregnancy. The parts on antithesis diet for specific dosha were very interesting. Some advices were bit unrealistic to follow especially the extensive journaling. Overall I would recommend this book for those future mommies that have interest in yoga,ayurveda and more holistic approach to pregnancy

Has a lot of interesting information that I haven't read yet in alternative pregnancy approaches.

pretty good reference for an Ayurvedic pregnancy. not necessarily strictly Ayurvedic in recommendations, but definitely a good reference to have along with the more general books such as Svoboda Ayurveda for Women.

Purchased this book for my Mom, a true green thumb, for Christmas and she LOVES it! She has said thank you several times and recently told me she has to force herself to not read ahead so she can savor it over a whole year, LOL!

A wonderful book! One doesn't even need to be a gardener to enjoy this book. It might even encourage a non-gardener. The writer is very entertaining and has a special gift of humor. The diary format is great.

Sweet little captions or short blurbs about gardening...some funny, some serious, but all gardeners know how true it all is!

I am enjoying reading this book at bedtime because the author was clearly enthusiastic about gardens and gardening, and so am I. I concur with another reviewer who pointed out that the author was very well-to-do (tips usually take the form of "have xyz done," assuming you have someone to work for you), so most of us would not relate well. What bothers me most, however, is that there are a few racial and gender statements typical of phrases and attitudes in the 1920s that are quite offensive now. In fact, when the first instance cropped up, it affected my whole attitude to the writer, although I know he was a product of his time. The author's comments on the cosiness and security of home during bad weather or bad times and other domesticalities do stand the test of time, though, and I've enjoyed some laughs from his comments on visitors from the city.All things considered, you may want to check the book out of a library and see if you like it - or can tolerate the occasional un-PC lapses.

If you like gardening memoirs, this one is pretty good. Some of his comments are dated, but he is generally good-humored.

It is a timeless piece of work for any serious gardener and will keep you company through all sorts of gardening trials and tribulations s well as successes and conquests. I have given many copies to my most beloved friends.
