VERY important book for the future of “Western” civilization (built on the backs of Indigenous people who we now, karmically, rely on for learning how to live!) Highly recommended, a terrific and very well selected group of writers who contributed. I hope there will be more so it can be a collection of volumes—so many more voices could add to this, not just sustainability as we think of it in eco terms, but political, educational, and many others as well.

This is readable, informed, insightful, unassuming and powerful all at once. It dispels myth, fiction and misperception about what it is to live, think and view the world as indigenous cultures in America had done for millennia. It breaks down, delves into and informs a number of key insights from a variety of tribal perspectives. On top of all of this, it just feels good, even soul-nourishing to read. The chapters are often short and encompass one specific topic or series of topics. There are those that jump around, weaving multiple threads together, and there are those that are less than a full page in length. None are easy to put down.Read this book and you'll be thanking yourself for taking the time to do so. If everyone could incorporate small amounts of such perspectives to their worldviews, we would live in a much different place.

Teaching university classes about sustainability, I try to integrate the spiritual and ethical as well as the more traditionally focused-on social, economic, and environmental pillars. I use the Earth Charter and other materials related to religion and ecology. This is a well-written book which overviews indigenous Native American teachings about the concepts of sustainability and resilience, and I'll incorporate it as part of the readings for my classes.

These are stories of peoples who have lived for hundreds of thousands of years in their places on the Earth without destroying themselves or the other beings who shared their places. We all need to return to the earth-view and respect that these peoples successfully nurtured until the rest of us came along and trashed just about every place there is to live. If we want humans to survive ourselves, we don't have to re-invent the wheel. The guides are there. And they really want to help us. I unreservedly recommend this reading to anyone who loves the Earth and wants to work for its survival.

I am very pleased with this book- I am using it as a main text in a course I teach on environmental issuesat a tribal college. I will continue to use this book as the primary text for this course. The students love this book too... the diversity of voices and perspectives makes this a must read for all.

This wonderful book has so much to offer the people of the world if they would just listen. Even when I'm just feeling down, I pick up this book and it enlightens me. If we don't start listening to the indigenous people's on this planet, we will destroy ourselves. It's not a matter of if, it's when. Please read this book and share it with others.

The book is great and the insights are priceless. A must-buy for those looking to understand our world and our role in it a little more clearly.

Good book. Great points, but do be careful to note the bias. Personally I agree with a great deal but there are a few problematic articles included.

Margarito's Forest

From School Library Journal

Gr 3 Up—A reverence for natural ecological cycles, ancestral heritage, and the importance of environmental preservation are the focus of this bilingual biography of Don Margarito Esteban Álvarez Velázquez, or Margarito. Told from the perspective of his daughter, Doña María Guadalupe, the story is set in Saq Ja', Guatemala, and is, in part, a retelling of the Mayan cosmovision of paying tribute to one's ancestral past by loving the earth. Margarito, who devoted his life to planting trees as a way to honor his family and to bestow a gift upon future generations, steadfastly plants more trees instead of giving in to pressure to use the land to grow crops. But when Guatemala is torn apart by genocide and widespread deforestation beginning in 1954, Margarito's forest is destroyed. Worse, Mayan villagers are killed or displaced, including Margarito himself, who dies during the unrest. But his daughter is able to return to the village to restore the forest herself and resettle the surviving indigenous villagers. She continues to plant trees to this day and aids in the education of a new generation of villagers there. Mixed-media illustrations capture the story's cultural essence and are a combination of original drawings, paintings, photography, traditional Guatemalan textiles, and artwork made by children at the Saq Ja' Elementary School. Readers and educators will benefit from thoughtful discussion questions and a study guide. VERDICT A timely addition to any children's collection, this colorful bilingual biography is as poignant as it is relevant, and will serve as a critical conversation starter for young, eco-conscious minds.—Natalie Braham, Denver Public Library

My two granddaughters, ages five and nine, love this book. They were fascinated by the true story that it tells and loved finding the children's drawings incorporated within the illustrations. They also were very interested in figuring out the Mayan number system. This book stresses the importance of caring for the land and respecting traditions. It even references the dirty war waged by military dictators against the Mayan people. A very special book indeed.

This book is stellar. Andy Carter weaves the beautiful story of a Guatemalan family through brilliant illustrations by Allison Havens, which synthesize traditional textiles, artwork by local children, and her own whimsical drawings. The tale opens up the world of a different culture to readers of all ages, sharing Margarito's family's experience through different languages, points of view, and historical background. It's a must-have!

A well told and compelling story that is beautifully illustrated. A wonderful companion to my 5th grader's Maya studies, showing how the Mayan people live on today, not just in the past.

The whole book is impressive, from its deep connectedness to indigenous Mayan culture to its illustrations involving village children with a sensitive artist.

Beautiful story and exquisite illustrations. Captures the attention and hearts of adults and children alike in our family. Important message about the past and future of the Maya and our entire planet.

Margarito’s Forest/El bosque de don Margarito is a nonfiction account of a Guatemalan man’s extraordinary devotion to the forest he loved. In addition to offering a heroic and memorable story, this picture book also enriches the range of Latinx representation in U.S. children’s literature. The story takes place in the central highlands of Guatemala, among the K’iche’ people and includes phrases in the K’iche’ language. Margarito’s Forest also expands the range of truth-telling by taking on a reality I’ve never seen acknowledged in a children’s book: Guatemala’s dirty war, which brought tremendous suffering to many Guatemalans and was especially devastating for the country’s indigenous peoples. The book makes these contributions while focusing on introducing young readers to the late Margarito Esteban Álvarez Velásquez, an unsung warrior for the environment. This humble man dedicated his life to maintaining the forest near his Guatemalan home as a place of nourishment, beauty, and ancestral significance. Don Margarito often labored alone, saving trees even as many others in the region cleared them for the sake of crop cultivation, and his story offers a powerful example of the impact one person can have even when facing obstacles and indifference.Based on oral histories shared by Don Margarito’s daughter, María Guadalupe Velásquez Tum, the narrative is set up as a conversation between Doña Guadalupe and her young grandson, Esteban. As Doña Guadalupe makes clear, her deep knowledge of the forest came from Don Margarito, who received it as a boy from the village holy man, Don Calixto. By emphasizing this chain of communication, the text also elevates the importance of transmitting family lore and practical wisdom to younger generations. It also offers valuable opportunities to recognize bodies of knowledge and practice that are often marginalized or belittled in mainstream narratives.Engaging Difficult Histories: As mentioned, the story also touches on a deeply troubling passage in Guatemala’s recent history. For thirty-six years, beginning in 1960, Guatemalans endured a “dirty war” in which government military forces were deployed against citizens. During this protracted horror, indigenous peoples suffered disproportionate losses at the hands of government soldiers, including deaths now classified as genocide. According to the Commission for Historical Clarification, the Guatemalan government often scapegoated Maya communities, and this was the precise fate suffered by the village where Doña Guadalupe and Don Margarito lived. Tragically, when Guatemalan forces raided their home village, Don Margarito was among those killed.Doña Guadalupe, who witnessed the raid, describes her harrowing experience to Esteban in honest terms, yet sparing details that might disturb young readers: “While your father was still a baby, the army came and destroyed our village. They burnt our homes down to the ground and they dug up our crops.” She and her two children fled to the forest, where her father’s lessons on edible plants and healing herbs proved critical to their survival. Needless to say, this is an age-appropriate version of the story, but as Doña Guadalupe makes clear, Esteban will learn the rest later: “When you are a little older, I will tell you more about those days and the dirty war that tore us apart.” This approach carefully balances honesty with consideration for the age of readers, offering a compelling example of how to speak truthfully to young audiences about difficult topics.Words and Images: Margarito’s Forest is also interesting in its layered approach to word and image. Incorporating the translation work of multiple contributors across three languages, the book is a multilingual text. English and Spanish sections appear on the same page along with embedded instances of K’iche’. (Adult readers may know this language by its former spelling, Quiché.) Although the presentation of K’iche’ phrases sometimes feels a bit forced and ungainly, its inclusion is a positive step toward unmaking the assumption that Spanish is “the” language of Central America by foregrounding its linguistic diversity. In fact, K’iche’ remains Guatemala’s second most widely spoken language after Spanish, and it is one of numerous surviving members of the Mayan language family. The illustrations in Margarito’s Forest are multimedia collages by Allison Havens, a native of Chicago who now resides in Guatemala. Her original art is central to each collage and often appears as black-and-white graphite figures framed by a patchwork of full-color elements. The collages incorporate photography, scraps of textiles, and drawings made expressly for the book by children from the village of Saq Ja’.In sum, Margarito’s Forest offers a tender glimpse into the life of a visionary, a courageous individual who followed his heart and acquired immense wisdom without the benefit of a formal education. Although the story makes clear the tragedy of Don Margarito’s death during the dirty war, it also demonstrates the enduring impact of his passionate devotion to the forest. Thanks to his daughter’s account—and to those who took pains to preserve it—his beautiful legacy lives on as the subject of this absorbing picture book.More information: According to the website for Hard Ball Press, Margarito’s Forest received the following distinctions: Most Inspirational Children’s Book by Latino Book Awards, a Commended Title in the 2017 Américas Award from the Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs, and a Best Book of 2017 by the Bank Street College of Education. The final pages of the book provide study questions for educators, librarians and parents. There is also a generous author’s note, detailing how the story came to his attention, and a section about the illustrator’s collaboration with the schoolchildren of Don Margarito’s village. For those using this book with older readers, or for parents and educators who would like to be better prepared to answer young students’ questions, it may be important to engage with the role played by the U.S. in training Guatemala’s military, including in the notorious School of the Americas, a U.S.-backed training site that played a pivotal role in violent repression in Latin America. The commission report on the Guatemalan dirty war specifically identifies the U.S. as a source of extreme and abusive military techniques that had “significant bearing on human rights violations during the armed confrontation.”

This book is amazing for young and old. The words and illustrations are very cool.

Margarito's Forest is a beautiful book, in both a visual and literary sense. The first that strikes you are the illustrations which are colorful, incorporating children's artwork, Mayan textiles as well as the illustrator's drawings in a collage format. This is a great book to read to your child or to use in a bi-lingual classroom.

Review

"Every once in a while, you stumble upon something so lovely, so unpretentiously beautiful and quietly profound, that you feel like the lungs of your soul have been pumped with a mighty gasp of Alpine air. This Is a Poem That Heals Fish (public library) is one such vitalizing gasp of loveliness ― a lyrical picture-book that offers a playful and penetrating answer to the question of what a poem is and what it does. And as it does that, it shines a sidewise gleam on the larger question of what we most hunger for in life and how we give shape to those deepest longings."―Maria Popova, Brain Pickings"This Is A Poem That Heals Fish is a rare little miracle of a book. It manages the brilliant trick of explaining the abstract concept of a 'poem' to a child through the simple but effective art of demonstration. The book itself is a perfectly constructed poem."― posterband.com"Exuding magic and unbridled creativity on every page, this is a book with the potential to heal more than just fish." - Publishers Weekly"An enchantingly abstract invitation to ponder poetry."― Kirkus Reviews"A great book for any age! At this very moment, it feels like one of the best books I’ve ever bought!” – A Year of Reading"A wonderfully sensitive seek-and-find experience for all of us." ―Vermont Country Sampler

literalContent: 'A Lexile® measure represents either an individual's reading ability (a Lexile reader measure) or the complexity of a text (a Lexile text measure). Lexile measures range from below 200L for early readers and text to above 1600L for advanced readers and materials. When used together Lexile measure help a reader find books at an appropriate level of challenge, and determine how well that reader will likely comprehend a text. When a Lexile text measure matches a Lexile reader measure, this is called a "targeted" reading experience. The reader will likely encounter some level of difficulty with the text, but not enough to get frustrated. This is the best way to grow as a reader - with text that's not too hard but not too easy.',

I purchased this book after reading the beautiful review on BrainPickings. As a writer gently attempting to introduce poetry to my 5-year old son, I fell in love immediately. It's so special, in fact, that I'm saving it for Christmas. But that hasn't stopped me from sneaking into my hiding place and reading it myself several times! Lovely pictures, poetic writing, and a child's earnest curiosity about what a poem truly is makes for a gem of a story.

Beautiful illustrations, beautiful language and beautiful ideas. Perfect for adults and children of all ages. Each individual metaphor adds up to the theme that poetry is different for each of us.

I randomly picked up this book at the library and it was such a hit that I bought a copy. The images are lovely and the text is like the best of poems. The story does a fantastic job of communicating the power of poetry to children. Even my sister, a high school English teacher, praised it and will share it with her classes.A fantastic introduction to poetry for children!

I love poetry and I wanted to encourage the love of poetry in my little cousins, age 1-6. I read this book when it arrived, prior to giving it as a gift, and could not understand why I had read such rave reviews of it. Perhaps it's that it is a translation from the original French, but I thought it was a bit confusing for kids.

This is a fun, engaging ,beautiful book for reading aloud. I am using it in my creative movement classes for young children as well as sharing it with adults who need an uplifting twinkle and chuckle.

This is a light-hearted and delightful experiential introduction to poetry for very young children---translated very successfully from the original French.

A sweet premise-what is a poem. Every one has a different idea of what makes a poem. It may be a little abstract for my five year-old grandson but my desire is for him to be as creative with words and feelings as he is with his drawings.
