A very good book on the SAS, by an ex-RSM (Regimental Sergeant Major). He manages to give little or nothing away in terms of tactical or operational details that he should not, but still the book is essential reading for anyone who reads a lot about the SAS or SF.It certainly rings a lot truer than other books, as he talks about things that go badly (eg his part in the Pebble Island raid), as well as things that go well. The Falklands section was certainly interesting, but there is a big jump directly to Desert Storm - nothing of interest happened in the rest of the '80s?The Desert Storm section is the largest part of the book, and gives details not seen elsewhere. Again, it reads as if the author is telling the truth, and 'Bravo Two Zero' certainly comes off like part-fiction as a result, with lots of mistakes by "Andy McNab", but I think we all know that by now?Worryingly for the Regiment, several men without the 'right stuff' had made it in by the start of Desert Storm and their lack of aggression was brutally exposed. This is covered in excruciating detail (for the Regiment) in this book. The author had scores to settle, and did so, addressing what he considered the false claims of other SAS books from this period. Probably necessary, and useful, but doesn't necessarily make the book a better read.

I enjoyed reading this book much more than Bravo Two Zero and some others. Bit of an eye opener on certain operations that were portrayed much differently by other SAS authors.

The author describes his lifes story before SAS and while with the SAS, sharing his failures and shortcomings just as frels as his successes.Given the authorised exceptionally long and glorious service with the SAS this makes the book appear much more trustworthy than most war stories

I owned the soft cover many years ago and read it cover to cover until it fell apart. When I found it in the store, I immediately bought it. A RSM in any army is a very special and respected person and rank. It is a great read which I will continue to keep rereading.

Great Book, Could not put it down. I was given a kindle and my brother suggested this book as a good read, and I have to agree. I have read many military biography's and this is one that that tops the list.

Couldn't put it down. One of the most informative SAS books ever read. An absolute must!

After having read many bios and memoirs of SEALs and Delta Force I couldn't help but try and read one from the SAS. After all, the SAS were the precursor to Delta and were supposed to be the toughest soldiers in the world. And they may very well have been, but Ratcliffe's account certainly didn't paint this picture. In fact his picture came off as the SAS were nothing more than bumbling idiots with a few tough and well respected soldiers. We are treated to a very dry account of Ratcliffe's life as a boy, to joining the Paras to becoming and SAS soldier and officer all the way through the Gulf War. Ratcliffe seems to skirt the actual details of selection, more so alluding to it and implying, rather than telling us and painting the vivid picture of the tough process of going through Selection. Additionally, he never talks about any of his missions and actions - such as Ireland, Dhofar, Falklands - with any detail. And the irony behind everything is we read about how much he and his men prepared only to never actually see action. Other than being "blooded" in Dhofar Ratcliffe talks about preparing and then setting out to take part in the action, but the action always concludes and finishes before he or his squadron can make it, most notably in the Falklands and Argentina. To me the SAS were portrayed as a bunch of scared men who can't seem to get anything right, and only succeeding because the enemy they are up against are not as sophisticated of a force. In the Falklands the soldiers kept getting lost, or misplaced, or a helicopter would fly straight into the teeth of the enemy instead of where they were supposed to go. A soldier would "see" the enemy and panikc and come running back yelling, only for it to turn out to be some rocks. Another would start yelling Ratcliffe's name at a bunch of civilians singing loudly and walking with torches, then begin shooting at them, only to not be able to hit a single one. In the Gulf War the men continually second guessed or were too afraid to even begin moving forward (when they were still in Saudi Arabia!) One would repeatedly dive to the ground whispering loudly the enemy is before them, even though he is the expert in detecting their heat signatures, and no one would be there.Time after time all Ratcliffe talked about are how inept the men of SAS are, and yet in the next sentence he would say how elite the SAS is and how tough they are. That they are the best, yet they couldn't seem to do a single mission without continually making mistakes and showing cowardice instead of courage. How he can reconcile the two I have no idea.We do get to see an okay picture of the life of an SAS soldier, but only peripherally, never, seemingly, with direct facts and descriptions. The author continually repeated himself, almost verbatim, several, sometimes three of four times, throughout the whole biography. I can't say that this was a good representation of the SAS as it showed them in a poor light, nowhere near equaling the SEALs or Delta Force, and in fact not even equaling the US Marines or Army. There seemed to be nothing special about the men who made it through selection, as he blatantly talked about how inept, unintelligent and cowardly many of them are, not even adhering to the basic structure of command that should have be ingrained at that point in their career.Who knows, maybe he wasn't at liberty to go into the more daring missions of the SAS, or maybe he wasn't able to portray the SAS that well. I will certainly read other bios of SAS soldiers if for no other reason to see them in action and understand whether they are tough soldiers, the best in the world. But this account didn't really do anything except, maybe, help understand what really happened with Bravo Two Zero and Victor Two.Not necessarily a recommend.2.5 stars.

Eye of the Storm is an amazing book in that it was an easy read and leaves you with a pretty good idea and appreciation of what it must have been like in the many hair raising stories that are in the book.

I bought this book, because I visited the area in June and want to go back in November. This is challenging wilderness to naviagate, and I wouldn't suggest you do it without a GPS. I too wish that the maps had been more detailed, the Tellico Plains map available through the Ranger station is more so. It is a great book, just was hoping for more knowledge gained, and it basically told me what I already know.

Tim Homan has done a great job of describing the trails of the Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock and Citico Creek Wildernesses. Although the format is more oriented towards a readability style rather than a guidebook style, all the essential information was there and in a clear concise manner. He includes several maps that are useful, but I would have given it a higher rating if the maps had been more detailed.

#10,446 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This magnificent book, now in its fiftieth-year anniversary edition, beckons us, by the sheer fact of its longevity, to learn from history. However, history is not about the past, it is about the present and the future. History is not a book to be read, it is a book to be written. We do not merely study the past, we inherit it. Knowledge of history can protect against the delusions and disillusionments of the current time but often, how we understand the present determines how we understand history. But still, one’s view of history also gives form to one’s political philosophy and beliefs. This process works both ways. A biased our incorrect view of historical events will lead one to a skewed political point of view. Belief in historical myths can lead to a political point of view that is an assault on reality itself as was the case with the Nazis. William Shirer’s book aids in setting the record straight about the ignoble crimes of the Nazis based on their contorted views of, and delusional beliefs about, history.William Shirer’s book is brilliant and should be required reading but we should not flatter ourselves into thinking that once armed with this knowledge of the past that we will be wise enough to recognize the warning signs of disaster and be in a position to act and avert it. Hegel once said that history teaches us that people never learn from history. I think that there is an important insight here, not just a cliché. By this I mean that it is difficult to say that we should learn from history. Each moment in history is distinctive and unique. Circumstances at any given time are different and change with time. At best, history might severe as an analogy that we try to use as a guide for something in the present but analogy is the weakest from of reasoning it is more like a rule of thumb. Arguments based on analogy are weak at best and become progressively weaker as the points of similarity become fewer. History can at most show us some generalities but even these are subject interpretation and endless disagreement. The desire to find cycles, repeating patterns, and lessons in and from history arises from our desire to find and make connections and a realized felt need for connectedness with the past. We like to make connections and recognize patterns even at the risk of false pattern recognition. Historical examples are presented to us with considerable persuasive rhetorical power in the form of imaginative paradigms but we should not be so easily taken in by this. It is hubristic to think that, with the careful study of history, as valuable as that study indeed is, that we learn all that we need to know from the past to guide us in the present and on into future.

Written by a man who lived through the years leading up to the Nazi Party's birth, growth, eventual election to power and all the subsequent insane and inhuman events that followed; a journalist keeping detailed diaries and then supplementing with years of detailed research through vast amounts of other documents, diaries, court records, interviews. Amazing! To read this book is a formidable but engrossing task and the end result is enormous satisfaction that I have truly learned an honest and complete historical lesson. My parents lived through WWII in Latvia, my father was drafted into the Nazi Army to fight the Soviets on the Eastern front and was severely wounded during the occupation, my mother escaped from Liepaja with the fleeing Nazi troops abandoned there on the day Berlin fell. The emotions which this book raised then resolved are indescribable as I finally felt I had learned all there was needed to know about what my parents went through because they would speak none of it. They hated the Nazis, they hated the Soviets, they could speak of none of it.

I wondered at first if I could get through such a long book on history. However, I found that while not "easy" reading it was not the drudgery I have encountered in other such books. Actually it moves freely if you don't spend too much time remembering all the names. The main characters are mentioned enough that they will stick with you. It covered a lot but without spending too much time on any individual topic. It gave me the big picture with enough detail to educate me on a lot of things of which I had been unaware. Lastly, it was interesting that it was a first hand account rather than a look back on history.

What is to say about this book. It should be considered among the most important books written. Well researched yet reads like it should, written by a journalist. The fact that Shirer was there adds to the intensity of the narrative. This should be required reading for any person seeking to understand the how the world can spiral into insanity. Particularly with the detailed accounts of the politics surrounding the diplomatic negotiations surrounding Austria, Czechoslovakia, and the invasion of Poland. If you are interested in the evolution of the fascist state read The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. If you are interested in the implementation of the unthinkable, read The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. If you want to understand how the Third Reich could happen, read The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.

This is a very interesting work -- I can hardly put it down. The problem is that the editors who "prepared" it for Kindle release, didn't. There are entire sections of the book out of place. You go along reading about complex and critical issues, and all of a sudden you are in an entirely different place and time dealing with a completely unrelated subject for a page or so, and then hop back to where you started. It is really irritating. I guess I think it's worthwhile to buy the book on Kindle, if only for the convenience of not having to lug a 1280 page book around, but if you want continuity and consistency, buy the book and skip the Kindle edition.
