The editor tries hard to present a balanced view on the differing sides of the death penalty issue. Various points of view are given from writings of those on the different ideas pertaining to the validity and use of the death penalty.

Required text!

Pages were not bonded very well, so it was hard to read the book without almost pulling the book apart.

Today, as I sit here at the computer thinking about writing a review of this book I know that in a couple of hours I will be watching the news and they will cover the trials of the Boston Bomber and the American Sniper killer. In both cases the prosecution is asking for the death penalty. Also there is likely to be a news segment on the drugs used for killing felons not working like they are advertised, and causing pain and discomfort. This book presents an examination of capital punishment that asks makes me want to ask a lot more questions than I thought about before. Do we want to kill criminals as an act of retribution? Will killing this man (very few women are given a death sentence let along actually killed) do anything to prevent crime? What is the effect of gender, and of race in capital punishment? What about the capital punishment of juvenile criminals? What about the benefits a wealthy person has in terms of legal representation when compared to someone using a public defender? These and the many more questions of a similar nature that the book brings up are not easy questions to answer.I do not think that the book is likely to alter your own views on capital punishment, but I don’t think you will put it down after you finish it without being given some new thoughts.

As a professor of criminal justice I have had the ocassion to read numerous texts on the death penalty, and Evan Mandery's, Capital Punishment in America: A Balanced Explanation, is by far the most comprehensive and balanced examination of the topic I have seen. I highly recommend it to any serious student of the death penalty, particularly to those who already have their minds made up.Professor Mandery's book is an outstanding compilation of the best research and scholarship on this controversial topic.--Mark A. Stelter, J.D.Professor of Criminal JusticeMontgomery CollegeHouston, Texas

This was my first order ever through Amazon. I was very pleased and have used it since partly because of this seller. This was a big help with purchasing my college books. Thank You

THIS is the book I wish I would've read before taking the bar exam...and arguably, my 1L year.Over the years, I've taken a few bar exams and attended a few bar prep courses (e.g. BARBRI).Yet, I STILL took away solid advice and strategies from Matt Racine's "Bar Exam Basics" and "How To Write Bar Exam Essays."Here's why they're both worth buying:1. After graduating from law school, you'll likely panic after realizing you have to shove 3 years worth of law into your brain (much of which you've either: 1) never learned; or 2) forgotten since your 1L year).2. Racine's book lends a helpful and comforting hand by outlining a game plan for getting mentally & physically prepared for taking the bar exam.3. Bar prep materials merely give you a list of scheduled topics, but not HOW to study, develop your own schedule, and formulate a routine. Furthermore, Racine tells you WHY it's important.4. It's a quick and easy read (115 pages).5. It's like $10. Thus, literally being the cheapest book (and investment) you'll ever make in your bar exam preparation.

No new enlightening information on how to prepare for and study for the bar. Only a good read if it’s free on kindle, otherwise I would get more enlightened from my morning Starbucks latte.

Literally a plan of basics to the bar exam.

A great mystery page turner that is steeped in clear and accurate renderings of Uganda's complex history. One of the best books I've read about Africa...if Uganda interests you in any way, take a chance on this book - I have been following the country since the 1980s and couldn't put it down.

I recently traveled to Uganda and I wanted a book to read that would teach me some of the foundations of Ugandan history and culture while still being enjoyable to read. I could not have picked a more perfect book. The book tells the story of Duncan Laki, who is on a mission to determine what happened to his father. Laki's father disappeared during the regimen of Idi Amin. I was somewhat surprised when less than a third of the way through the book we seem to have discovered Laki's fate. However, as the book progresses I see that the point is not who pulled the trigger. Instead the author takes us back to Ugandan's history. And I mean WAY back. To the formation of the Great Rift Valley. He tells the story of the first white explorers who traveled to Ugandan in search of soldiers. He tells the story of how colonialism shaped the country and and turned the once fluid tribal boundaries into sources of discrimination. He tells the story of how the politics of the day allowed a man like Idi Amin to come to power. The author tells the history of Uganda in an interesting and purposeful way that makes it clear that the fate of Laki's father was not determined by the hands of an executioner or whim of a terrible dictator, but that the events that determined his fate were really set into motion far far back in Uganda's history. This is a well-researched book about Uganda's history told with the pace and excitement of a murder mystery novel. A great choice for anyone interested in African history but without the dry tone of a history novel.

I have read many books about Uganda, even liven for a long while in Kampala. Therefore now that I'm back in Europe- I read books about the place in the world I miss the most. That's the main reason why I bought it. I didn't know the whole story of the first attempt of getting rid of Amin in 1972. But I knew some parts of it and this book gave a reasonable adjustment of the already well known history. It also was a personal attempt to portray how the changes has given the society that exist in Uganda today. Especially the NRM government controlled base and how the tribes from the east have more power than in the Northern had while dictator Amin was ruling. So I knew a lot about it already and enjoyed reading it through this angle. Get it personal from families involved in the transitions between, Obote, Amin and Museveni. Giving the touch of how Tanzania was involved too, give a more understanding of why Amin attracted them and not only was on a stupid crusade as many European writers have told before hand. This book isn't giving the same story as you read in the Ugandan New Vision History packs or Daily Monitor Newspaper. But its a great experience and gives the reader for some new information about what happen in Mbarara at the first attempt to get Amin away from power and why it failed. So sit down with some ginger tea and lean back, read and enjoy the moment even if it's a little painful to read about others misfortunes, but this is the world we live in. Please don't forget those who made it as we live today. That's maybe the main purpose of the writer. I don't know but it could been so.

My work brings me to Uganda several times a year and to Mbarara in particular. A friend who loved in Uganda recommended this book for some further insight into a culture which has remained a bit elusive to me. From the rule of Obote, Amin, and even back to its European settlement, this book chronicles the history of rule and power in Uganda. The one thing that I understand a bit more than before is the importance of the various tribes and how tribal conflicts today still affect day-to-day life in Uganda. I've heard people say, "Oh, that's because she/he is Bahima" and I never quite knew what the meant or how heavy a statement like that is. Not that it means the same thing today as it did in the 1950's but I still find it fascinating. This is a really great read for anyone who wants to know about how Uganda's past affects its current state and future.

Another book selected by my Men's Book and Gourmet Group, which provided insight, though emotionally painful, into how children in a tribal war-torn country, could become "children soldiers." One is left to wonder how those who survived could recover and live emotionally stable lives.

I found this to be a well rounded insight on the history impacting Ugandan culture. There is definitely more to cover and different viewpoints about Uganda’s history but I think the author did a good job highlighting different perspectives of actual Ugandans.

Definitely worth a read when going to Uganda. The author really knows all the details. It is relevant today as elections approach.

I loaned this book to our priest, who is from Uganda. He liked it so much that I bought another one for him.

As had everyone addicted to golf, I had watched every shot, every tragic happening, all the news about Tiger; I hardly felt I needed more. But 'Tiger' showed me I had less than 10% of the human story.Programmed from the cot to play golf and living live with no other purpose he did exactly that which his father expected of him. His father is exposed for all his depraved, bigoted, abusive and self indulgent traits. Tiger is unrelentingly proud of him but allows him to be buried in an unmarked grave. The reader is left question just "...Why..."? Little is said about Kultida but the most telling quote was that she told Tiger never to damage her name. Imagine her sitting, face drawn in the front row, while he was forced to face the press at The PGA Tour HQ after being caught cheating by Elin. There is plenty for the golfer. His change to the Nike Tour ball which flew straighter, after which he won the US Open by 15 shots at Pebble Beach...and ushered in the age of the modern ball. Tiger followed up with hitherto unheard of margins. Just how much are today's scores dependent on this technology?I only came to realize on the last three pages that he is still under probation for his drug cocktail arrest on Military Trail in May, 2017. As someone with three, and one very similar, back operations to those which Tiger underwent, I understand just how badly a man can crave Vicodin. Yet here we are, only eleven months later and Trackman tells us that Tiger has a 129 MPH clubhead speed. The book tells us just what an athletic phenomenon is Tiger, and even if not winning Majors again...I say 'Yet"...playing 4 rounds in 4 days, practising hard and competing is hard to believe.Plenty of drama; plenty of tragedy; little humor. But now we see TIger on television, charming to reporters, a warm humility in the man who rejected summarily nearly everyone who tried to hold him close. Perhaps burying the ghost of his controlling father and being left with only his mother will allow Kutilda to look upon her son with the pride denied her years ago.

LOVED this book! An absolute page turner from start to finish. Yes, I'm a golf fan, but this is a story of human psychology and the cost of being an outlier. Talks as much about parents as it does about Tiger himself. Riveting. Provides the dark, inspiring and sad context to rise and fall of Tiger Woods. Benedict does it again, leaving no stone unturned and piecing together a rare glimpse into the real Tiger Woods. A greek tragedy in every sense: promise, hope and generational talent brought down by hubris, vice, and karma. You do not need to be a golf fan to enjoy this book.

The two authors are so compassionate and understanding of what and who made Tiger. He is a product of his upbringing, as we all are and fixing ourselves as we get to be adults is usually impossible. As I always believed, Tiger's problems are mental and emotional and in some ways responsible for his physical problems too. The book is totally supportive of Tiger and I read the last few pages with tears clouding my eyes. Tiger should be happy with the book just because Benedict and Keteyian are on his side. If he's not, the reason is simply that it exposes personal sides of Tiger and being the intensely private person he is, he won't like that but I think he's beginning to realize the pettiness of his feelings and who's his friend and who isn't. If you love Tiger, you'll love this book.So private, here's an example: O'Meara was being interviewed by the Golf Channel and one question was how is Tiger and O'Meara answered with "good days and bad days." That's all he said. That night there was a late night Tiger text to O'Meara that read," I love you like a brother but I'd appreciate it if you didn't discuss my health with the media.I hope that all the people that were so good to Tiger thru the years, personal and professional, forgive him someday and try to understand him. He wasn't raised to be a good and nice person. Earl and Kultida were failures as parents in my opinion and this book, without saying so, makes that pretty clear.

Simply put, this is the most complete book about the rise and fall of one of the greatest golfers ever that I've ever read. The way his upbringing, and the way his parents raised him, and influenced him, showed up again and again as he grew into adulthood, and not always in a favorable way. You learn several not so pleasant things about the way he's treated people who were allegedly friends, and especially the people he perceived as enemies. He was constantly surrounded by money - fame - fortune - and obligations to keep it all going forward. All while retooling his swing several times, and (almost) coming back better than before. From a golf perspective, this book also clearly points out - more than once - just how good Tiger was in his hey day. No one - repeat no one - will ever consistently win 30% of the tournaments they enter in a year. Today's golfers would be likely to do it once,...and Tiger did it repeatedly. At one point he was the defending champ - in all four majors - at the same time. Obviously Tiger Woods the man is still a work in progress, and who knows when/if he'll ever win on tour again. But Tiger Woods the golfer is very simply one of if not the best ever. Stop labeling every golfer who wins once or twice "the next Tiger Woods". On the course, there will - never - be another.

An exceptional read and very entertaining as well as informative. It was quite interesting to delve into the life and childhood of Tiger and it was as expected, a domineering set of parents, who set out to create the worlds greatest golfer. Along the way the poor guy did not have a normal childhood, with friends and siblings. He was an only child, essentially shut off from the world though golf and more golf and when done with that some more golf. An introverted personality developed and who knows what he might have been like if not for his first love Dana........I liked that part of the book best. I wish the authors had let the reader know what ever became of Dana. Good book, buy it and enjoy it and you will more than likely want to read it again.

McLynn knows the terrain and the times so well that he writes about 12th- and 13th-century history and culture as if it were yesterday. As a lover of history, I want to go on record and say that this is my favorite book to date on Genghis Khan (or Mongols in general). I don't think it deserves 5 stars, but because of the rating system this is the closest I can come to how I truly feel about the book. If I was being honest, I would say it deserves between 4.5 and 5 stars. That being said, I would like to provide some likes and dislikes of the book so that others can decide whether or not they would like to also read it. Although I fully understand that a lot of people won't agree with me on some (or all) of the things I have to say, I truly hope it helps someone in their decision of a possible future purchase.I believe Frank McLynn's book does the following things well:1. He writes the book in a way that isn't too academic. It is an academic book (and has over 100 pages of notes and bibliography that he drew his information from), but it didn't read like one. Once I started the book it was very hard to put down.2. He provides a very detailed (and in my opinion needed) couple of chapters on the geography of central Asia and what the "Mongols" were like before being united by Genghis Khan. The geography part is a little long-winded, but the history behind what was there prior to Temujin and the dynamic between the different nomadic tribes is truly essential to a full understanding of (or appreciation of) what Genghis Khan accomplished in a relatively short period of time.3. He breaks the book down into logical parts instead of just trying to run through everything with a straight chronology. He begins with the uniting of the different Mongol tribes and then breaks down the conquests into the Jin (northern China), the Khwarezmian Empire (one of my favorite parts of the book), and Eastern Europe (including Russia). I also appreciate the fact that the book doesn't end with the death of Genghis Khan. It goes on to concentrate on his son Ogodei's role as Great Khan and then glosses over Guyuk and Mongke. It all seems to make more sense (to me) with the way that he put it together.4. He doesn't go crazy over trying to be a military expert and describe each conquest (battle) with overly small details. I realize this might be a negative to some, but for me, it made the book much more enjoyable.5. Finally (I'm sure I could find more positives, but I am just including these) McLynn uses the conclusion to do some interesting things like speculate about why the Mongols didn't (or couldn't) take over Western Europe. It included some odd ideas, but it was interesting none the less. The following is the hopefully small downside to McLynn's book:1. He adds a lot of cliched type of language throughout the entire book. I would include a specific, but really all you need to do is open the book up and read a page or two and you will find a perfect example. I am not sure if he thinks he is being clever or if he believes this is helpful, but it became a bit of a distraction after a while.2. He kept emphasizing the result of not surrendering to the Mongols after every single battle. They would kill everyone (brutally), rape (brutally), take artisans captive to be put to use later on, and use any other captives as fodder for future battles (sieges). I liked them including the brutality of the Mongol conquests and why they did what they did, but I found myself reading the same post-battle details over and over (and over). This may seem picky, but it was a negative for me.3. This next one is something that I picked up on because of my interest in Russian history. McLynn seemed condescending to Russia and their history. One example is the "attack" on Alexander Nevsky and how his accomplishments are over-rated and relatively insignificant compared to other events in history. You may not view this in the same way, but I thought I would include it anyway.4. Finally, McLynn made (in his conclusion) a couple of very odd comparisons between Genghis Khan and Jesus and Genghis Khan and Francis of Assisi. I didn't see the significance of including this in the book.Overall, if you are interested in Genghis Khan and the Mongols this book is a keeper.Feel free to rip it apart if you like. It seems like that is what people do nowadays with reviews online.

Great narrative and in depth retelling and analyses of the man and his times. The detail and the notes provided add much to the understanding of Genghis Kahn. An excellent read!

Easily the best book on the subject. I think I have about 20 other books on Genghiz Khan/Mongols. This is the most detailed and accurate of them all. What I like about it even more is that it is written in a way so that it makes the story immediate or come to life. The maps put the place and the action in perspective.

The story gets a bit tedious at times with the flood of names with which most of us are unfamiliar, but this is unavoidable given the remoteness of the subject. It may be a little exhausting but this is due to the simple fact that Genghiz did so very much. Fills a major gap in our understanding of broader history.

Man O man did the author ever do his research on this book!!! I was amazed at the almost day to day detail about Genghis's life and accomplishments. Actually the great gerth of information was sometimes too much but I have to give credit to the author for his indepth work!

I enjoyed this historical account of Genghis Khan and his seemingly ever-expanding empire. It was chock full of well researched anecdotes and theories as to the successes and (few) failures of Genghis Khan, and some of his successors. The only thing I didn't like was the various forays the author took into climate and geography, which was a little dry at times. However, it did add some good context.

This is an outstanding review of a world class figure! Captivating!

If you are looking for a straightforward biography of the Khan of Khans, you may need to look no further than this monument. I took it to Uzbekistan to help imagine the siege and reduction of Bukhara and Samarkand. Genghis Khan spent the greater part of his career in Central Asia, leaving his foremost general Muqali to flail away at China, and to conquer the future territories of his grandson Kublai Khan. It's all here, and it is more than a biography. It's a history really, and a jumping off point for further exploration. In addition to 500 pages of text, you get two appendices and a big bibliography. I've never read a McLynn book before, being put off by his mixed reviews, and wide range of titles. How can anyone write so much on such disparate topics? Apart from grandiloquent words, the writing is clear and strong.
