Great Book

If you are limited to an HPLC without MS detection or any of the other bells and whistles, this book is a great resources. It goes over how to develop and optimize HPLC methods with an emphasis on separation, rather than selective detection.I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a down to earth practical guide to HPLC.

Great book! It can solve my most practical problems. I would highly recommend it to entry-level or junior-level chemists.

great product!!!

Like the title, it's a detailed practical guide for HPLC. Very usedful. And brought as a used book, half the price, in almost new condition, a good bargain.

This is the best book of which I know, on the development of HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatographic) separations. However, there have been important changes in HPLC since this edition, especially with smaller diameter particles for packing materials.I wish Wiley would prod the authors on an update.

I find this book to be a valuable reference book on HPLC. I work extensively with HPLC and I can always rely on it to provide the in-depth explanations of what's going on. It covers all aspects of method development, form deciding where to start and figuring out what's going wrong, to finishing the method and validating it, although the validation chapter is just an overview. As of 2007, it's still relatively up to date, regarding new column technologies and latest practices.I really recommend this book, if it's your first time developing a method or if you're a seasoned professional, you will find many useful chapters in the book.

This is a very useful reference to have if you work extensively on HPLC. I find its of more use to understand concepts ...there is a lot of information here.Which means - if you are looking for a solution to a problem and you want to research separation theory - a great book.If your looking for a quick fix to an HPLC problem - not as good. This is a detailed, extensive and well written text on HPLC Method development - wish there was more on validation here though.

Babies Don't Eat Pizza: A Big Kids' Book About Baby Brothers and Baby Sisters, by Dianne Danzig

Review

While Danzig, an R.N. who has led sibling preparation classes for two decades, and Tilley \ (Growing Up: It's a Girl Thing) seek a spot on a very crowded bookshelf, their practical, straightforward approach merits a look. Focusing on day-to-day living with an infant, the text adopts an unfussy tone that subtly flatters readers as being sensible and mature (relatively speaking). "Babies are small and fragile and strong," writes Danzig. "Watch out for your ears and nose, and don't let your hair get too close." It's also notable that Danzig refers to the infant as "your baby," clearly signaling that the reader has a stake in all this, too. She reinforces the connection by referring readers frequently to their own babyhood: "Can you believe you had to learn to roll over?" Tilley's ink and watercolor cartoons are sunny and empathic in the Laura Cornell mode, and include plenty of visual jokes to encourage anxious kids-and their parents-to bond. Headings on most spreads make this volume eminently browsable-and therefore a handy family resource. --Publishers Weekly, Jan. 2009Stop right here if you are looking for a perfect book to tell children about their new lit\ tle brother or sister. Done in a light-hearted but also matter-of-fact style, this book will answer all of the questions new big siblings have. The book ranges from what babies look like to what they eat to what they can do plus all of the hair pulling and stinky bottoms too. The mix of the sweet with the annoying will prepare children well.Danzig's text is spot on, offering just the right amount of information and leaving nothing to a child's imagination. The tone is exactly right too, filled with humor but staying up front and informative. Tilley's illustrations add a friendly approachable feel to the information, keeping the book light rather than intimidating.A great book for public libraries to have on hand to inform all of the new big brothers and sisters. This would also be a great gift for the new sibling when the pregnancy announcement is made. --Tasha Saecker, Children's Librarian, Director-Elisha D. Smith Public Library (Menasha, WI), Feb. 12, 2009Becoming a big brother or sister is a very big deal in a child's life...try to think of a \ book that discusses infant development on a child friendly level...Well, thanks to Dianne Danzig, Babies Don't Eat Pizza fills in that gap nicely...This is a very sweet (but not saccharine-there's plenty of humor) and respectful book. Kudos to Danzig for noting that some mommies have an operation to get the baby out, and that some babies need to stay in an incubator if they are small or sick. The book empowers children in interaction with their new brother or sister...If you know of a soon-to-be big brother or big sister, get him/her this book. --Jennifer Schultz, Youth Services Librarian, Warrenton Branch of the Fauquier County Public Library System (VA), Feb. 27, 2009Featured as "Parents' Press Pick": ...What do babies do? They sleep, they nurse, they have wacky hair - and so did you, Dianne Danzig explains in this charming, kid-friendly book for ages 3-8. Our resident sibling (Celia, age 3, big sister to Reuben, age 6 months) gave it two thumbs up. So do we. Practical tips for parents too. --Dixie Jordan, Editor/Publisher, Parents' Press (San Francisco Bay Area, CA), March 2009

This covers everything and I thought it was perfect for my 4yo son who is having some trepidation about having a new sister soon. However, what I love about it, my sister-in-law was mildly horrified by... I like that it covers the basics--how the baby grows inside the uterus, how it is born, and then what it does through the first year or so. Nothing explicit, nothing involving where babies come from...However, my SIL's 7 year old niece saw the book and read it to herself. At one point she exclaimed "Oh so that's how it happens," and she quoted the book "the baby is born either through an opening between the mother's legs or through a cut on her belly" (I'm paraphrasing here). SIL snatched the book away and was pretty pissed at me.I had no problem reading that to my son, because that is how it happens. It's not sexual... they don't even say "vagina," but she didn't like that. So fair warning to the more conservative among you. It also shows a baby breastfeeding--I loved it, but again, you might not be comfortable discussing that with your kiddo, so....

This was the PERFECT book for our daughter when we told her that we were pregnant and she would be a big sister. I looked at several other books but none of them were appropriate for her age (7 years) - they were all much too young for her. This one is the perfect blend of good information, facts about babies, and light hearted enough to make sure that the older sibling knows he/she will still be loved even when baby comes. She still reads it often and it has helped her to become even more excited about being a big sister. HIGHLY recommend for older first time siblings!

Great! Bought it for our five year old, who will be a big sister in a couple weeks. It covers EVERYTHING, without going into gruesome detail (the baby eats and breathes through the umbilical cord, and is pushed out through an opening between moms' legs, or lifted out through a special cut made by a doctor in moms' bellies). Love that it covers that newborns are weird-looking, and don't understand that it hurts when they pull your hair. It also emphasizes that Older Sibling will still get love, attention, and hugs after the baby comes home, and that it's normal to have LOTS of different feelings about the new baby. Just be sure to discuss them with your parents.Reading this book aloud with our daughter has encouraged her to ask a lot of great questions that I don't think she would have felt comfortable with earlier, and I feel like she's a lot more prepared for the transition now.I will definitely be recommending it to my friends who are expecting!

Helped to ease son's mind. Our son is 4 years old and this really helped him to calm down and understand what is happening with baby in mom's tummy and what to expect. It has pictures of what the baby looks like in mummy's tummy (floating in the womb with an umbilical cord). Briefly abut delivery (between mommy's legs or surgery). And then what to expect after baby is born. It's very straightforward so if you want to avoid a biological explanation then I wouldn't recommend this. However, my son loved this book and it was exactly what we as parents were looking for to provide age appropriate information. It was written in a simple way for him to understand and fun enough to keep his attention.

Sturdy book with nice illustrations, a variety of families are shown thoughout the book so there’s something for everyone. I returned it though because it was a little too mature with some of the details and illustrations. It was a gift for my niece so I wasn’t comfortable giving her a book that may bring up the “where to babies come from” questions before her parents are ready to address it. Had it been for my own child, I would have probably waited until he/she was closer to 8 or older. It’s not done distastefuly, just a bit more imformative than I wanted for a fun book for a young child.

Maybe I didn't pay close enough attention to the description, but this book is not what I was expecting. It was BORING for my 5 and 3 year olds. The title drew me in and made me think it was going to be a funny bedtime book with some basics about what kids can and can't do with a baby, but it dragged on and on with facts, and we all lost interest. My kids love long bedtime stories, but this just didn't work for us.If you're looking for factual details about what will happen when the baby comes, this is a great book! It really explains things in a nice way that kids can understand. It's not a bad book, just be aware that it's more factual than fun.

Very valuable in teaching my 4 year old what to expect when her sister came. I appreciate that both vaginal and c-section deliveries were included as my delivery turned from one into the other. I also appreciate that breastfeeding is included, along with a picture. The book is straight forward and informative without being overly complicated or gruesome. A great addition to the library!

This was great! A ton of info so younger or more distractible kids might enjoy it broken up a bit. Super informative, sparked a lot of conversations and gave my daughter a tiny bit of pause on welcoming her baby brother lol. But that's ok because she's so over the moon excited that a little realism now will save us some shock later! Nothing scary or doom and gloom. Things I wouldn't have thought to warn her about like funny shaped baby heads, the gross umbilical stump were covered. I loved this kind of book as a kid during any life change and would circle back and read them again and again. Very glad we brought this one home!
