I would place this book in the top 5 of every book I've ever read in terms of the personal impact it has had on me. Manning's words (which all flow straight from Biblical truths) inspired me and encouraged me in a time when I desperately needed encouragement. Abba's Child is a roadmap to finding your true identity in Christ and not in all the fickle feelings and distractions of the world. This book will help you let go of insecurities and regrets and wholeheartedly grasp the grace and peace God is offering to His children. In beautiful and profound ways, the book reminds the reader of what truly matters (and what doesn't matter at all). This is a book everyone should read and re-read. We can't hear this message often enough!

I wish I read this book years ago. If you have ever felt guilty over a past sin(s)....read this book! If you have ever doubted God's love for you....read this book! One reviewer said it was New Age....no way. This is a beautifully written honest book that left me longing for God and convinced of His love for all of us.

This book has completely changed my life. I think about what I learned from this book almost every day. I am a child of Abba. This is my identity. God is a Heavenly Father that loves me so much. Jesus Christ died to be with me. I do not know how to sum up how much this book has had an impact on my life. I am so thankful for Brennan Manning's stories, grace, eloquent words and authentic story. This is a crappy review but you need to read this book. I'm serious. What a wonderful book. He is so real & honest which is very refreshing. Both my husband & I enjoy his realism as he has walked thru life struggling to know God & to know himself as God knows him & adores him.It has meant so much to me, because I never could understand the verse, " love your neighbors as yourself " because I never did love myself. With Brennan sharing his walk, he's showing me I can love myself because God loves me as an imperfect lady that I am even making mistakes.

After reading the first chapter I felt so overwhelming loved in God's presence. Each chapter I have grown deeper in my Abba's love. I am still reading it. It is a book that I take time to reflect on and to enjoy being in Abba's loving embrace. A must read to go ever deeper in a honest, genuine personal relationship with Jesus. God bless.

This is a wonderful book. If anyone has doubts about God's love for them, this is a must read. Manning's style may not appeal to everyone, but I think he touches the heart on this one.

I can't get enough of Brennan Manning's work. Every book of his that I have read, I have learned something that brings me closer to our joyous walk with the Lord.

I enjoyed this more than The Ragamuffin Gospel. It's very well-written and you can tell it comes from a lifetime of hard-earned experience. Many references to famous spiritual authors (Thomas Merton, C.S. Lewis, etc) as well as quotes from other famous authors. This would be a good book for someone going through AA as he references his experiences with recovering from alcohol addiction.

Chibok is a poor and neglected town in Nigeria, where much of the population work in agriculture and life was fairly uneventful in this obscure corner of the country, until an event which brought it to the world’s notice. On the 14th April, 2014, members of Boko Haram kidnapped 276 schoolgirls. Less than fifty managed to jump off the vehicles which they were loaded into. In October 2016, 21 girls were released after negotiations and a handful were rescued or escaped. Tragically, the majority of the girls are still missing.Author , Helon Habila, travelled to Chibok; a town in lockdown since the events of 2014. While telling the story of the terrible events in Chibok, he also explains the current political situation in Nigeria. The checkpoints, the roadblocks, the schools burnt down in local villages he passes through, the villages abandoned, the ethnic and religious divisions, intolerance and corruption are all shown without emotion and are the more shocking for the journalistic style.Boko Haram is the nickname for a group named Jama’atu Ahlis Surina Lidda’awati Wal-Jihad, or “the people committed to the propaganda of the Prophet’s teachings and Jihad,” which was founded by Mohammed Yusuf. With such a long name, they presumably needed a shortened version; Boko Haram, which means (loosely translated), “Western education is abhorrent.” Indeed, two months before the attack in Chibok, Boko Haram terrorists invaded the Federal Government College, killing fifty nine young boys. It was a chilling rehearsal for Chibok. Previously, the terrorists had been robbing banks; but as they were pushed back into the forest, kidnapping became an easier way to make money, as well as providing women to cook, clean and to act as ‘wives.’ One of their main aims is to stop education, especially that of girls.Habila explains the history behind the events and he also shows the impact that they have caused. Not only to the parents of the girls; many of whom have suffered physically, mentally and even died after the loss of their daughters, but also to the community and families. One of the most shocking parts of the book, though, comes when he interviews three of the girls themselves and they tell their story in such a straight-forward way. Even more shocking though, was (and is) the political inactivity after the girls were taken. In fact, one minister erupted when being interviewed on television, so incensed was he about being questioned about the missing girls. It seems almost impossible that such a terrible thing as young girls being taken by force, for no other reason than wanting an education, has simply been ignored by the government of the country that is meant to protect them.This is an extremely important read. It gives a good background to the political situation in Nigeria and explains, without emotive language, but in a very moving way, the events in Chibok. He also tells of those, such as the Education Must Continue Initiative, who are fighting against Boko Haram and who helped some of the girls who did escape that day. The people Habila interviews are so remarkably stoic that I have to say I was astounded, tearful and extremely angry at the end of this book. A very moving read, which I highly recommend. I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review.

However, the time passed, the fate of the girls is still unknown, but the social media and the world in general got busy with more terror and kidnappings acts taking place all over the world. Helon Habila is going to his native Nigeria, to Chibok, revealing the fine or deep social and cultural divisions, and the everyday struggle for survival. He observes with the educated eye of the journalist and writers with the inspiration of the novelist, keeping perfectly the balance between a featured report and a work of fiction. It reminded me of his Oil on Water, a novel which I liked. The case of the Chibok girls could be a revelation about the entire situation in Nigeria and the tensions created by the raise of the Boko Haram, of whose expansion the authorities were aware without intervening to stop it. I wish I could give this a 10. This is a wonderful color by number. It is more for an experienced colorer. There is so much gorgeous detail that the end result is amazing. Adding the outlining that they recommend adds to the beauty. The scenes are amazing. I can’t find anything negative. Another great feature is that the numbers do not show through. My new favorite color by number

I love the creative haven color by number books. This one is no exception. It’s very colorful and has a great variety of colors used in most pictures. The color key does name the colors, the pages are perforated and one sided. My only issue with this and the last few creative haven color by number books is the use of the “shade” option as one of the numbers used. To me it’s used far too often and takes away one of the reasons for doing color by number, ie not having to do this sort of thing to complete a beautiful picture. Otherwise I’d give this book 5 stars.

I love all of the Creative Haven Color by Number books and have all of them. I think they are the "real" classic kind of color by number (like the paint by number kits in the 1950's).Many of the drawings seem to be Autumn Season.Good paper, one sided, perforated pages.Finished color examples on the inside covers.Coloring chart lists name of color over the color rectangle, which is helpful.I keep hoping for a Holiday version Color by Number book by Creative Haven.

Finally - I actually got a color by number that is really really nice. Great pictures and they are all good pictures......not like a lot of the other books that have been very disappointing. This one has numbers off to the side and they are very clear unlike the dot matrix dots in quite a few. Thank you and let me know if you come out with anymore of this style.

The numbers are to small and because they put several different numbers on the same item the total picture as to many lines breaking everything up it's hard to color even if you don't use the numbers. I also don't like the colors they use on the items. Wouldn't buy this had I seen it first.

This is too advanced for me. Gave it to the art teacher at work so his students could use the pages as extra credit, so at least it's not wasted. The outside lines are too light, too jagged; it's just tedious.

I only did the first page; more difficult than the regular ones and the colors are more masculines for my likes. I preffer to use my creativity. It is very hard for me to see the tiny and less unclear numbers.

I purchased three of these color by numbers and unless you have some sort of bionic vision, good look seeing all the numbers, some of the sections are so tiny!! I am so disappointed, gave two stars because the pictures are pretty but my 50 year old eyes, even with my glasses, can't see to color it. Can't return because I did try, but all of these creative haven color by numbers have the same problem. I will try the large ones and see if they are better.

Good. I've got it because it was one of the textbooks I needed.

In this translation of Anselm's works, Hackett publishing produce a beautiful, clear and well-presented set of some of Anselm's key doctrinal and meditative theological writings. Included in this set of writings are Anselm's famous 'Monologion' and 'Proslogion', his famous work on the doctrine of salvation 'Cur Deus Homo' (why God became man), as well as some of his minor doctrinal works and philosophical fragments.A review is too short a space to describe Anselm's beautiful and complex theological system that dominated Western Christian thought for over a thousand years and still resonates powerfully in much of Christian belief and liturgy. Anyone familiar with the prayers in the Roman liturgy, or the collects in the Anglican books of prayer, will see the spirit of St Anselm resonating very strongly. St Anselm was even recently praised to a very high degree by Pope Benedict, who clearly felt himself at home in Anselm's contemplative way of doing theology.Anselm, like other classical theists, has come under some attack in recent times. These critiques range across a broad front, from those who criticise his famous ontological argument for God's existence to his defence of what might be called 'classical theism', a conception of God as the Supreme Being, and a Being that is uncaring, unchanging, 'male', immutable and completely unresponsive to human suffering. Other attacks include a criticism of his account of human salvation as requiring a reparation to God in the form of Christ's sacrifice to atone for human sin, restore the affront to God's honour caused by sin, and to restore human beings to fellowship with God. Such a theory seems to require a kind of 'penal substitution' to an angry God, or reduces salvation to a commercial transaction.While Anselm's theology is not perfect, it is coherent and beautiful in many ways, and as with Augustine and Aquinas, many objections turn on misreadings of his theology. Scholars have abundantly shown Anselm's concept of God does not mean God is uncaring, angry or lacking in mercy and compassion, or that Anselm is a pure rationalist with no room for a sense of darkness and mystery about God. Anselm's language is deeply poetic and moving at times, and even more so in his devotional works, which unfortunately are often not translated with his doctrinal works (see Benedicta Ward's 'Anselm - Meditations and Prayers' by Penguin). Anselm's account of the incarnation, sin and atonement actually both take the seriousness of sin and the infinite love of God into account, and is surprisingly relevant to modern problems like the destruction of creation caused by sinful human activity (as Joan Nuth has beautifully shown in a paper comparing his work to Julian of Norwich).Anselm's medieval juristic theology and its concept of harmony and order are not exactly applicable to a more complex and less simplistic world that is the one contemporary Christians have to face. Even so, Anselm's Benedictine sense of harmony, stability, beauty, proportion and wonder before the mystery of God, the liturgy and the incarnation are all still highly relevant today, as is the powerful appeal of his ideas. For better or worse this great Benedictine scholar and monk has been a formative influence in Western church history and Western Christianity and for such a clear, logical and elegant thinker, he is worth reading, even after almost a thousand years have passed between our time and his.

I will not spend any time describing the philosophical or theological merit of Anselm's work. I'll simply list what I think are three important features of this text that one might not be aware of. First, all of the texts in this book are translated by the same person, Thomas Williams (a leading scholar on Anselm). This makes it, in my opinion, superior to the Oxford World Classics version of Anselm's work, which has translations from multiple translators of mixed quality, which can cause confusion because different translators do not always translate the same word the same way. Second, Williams also provides an extremely helpful glossary that explains the various usage of Anselm's technical terms. If you are unsure what Anselm means by a particular term or phrase, Williams probably has an explanation of it! Finally, this book is mislabeled; it should not be called Anselm's "Basic Works," but Anselm's "Nearly Complete Works," since it contains almost all of Anselm's work, with the exception of one work on language (called the De Grammatico) and various prayers, sermons, and the like.

Though a paperback edition, the book stood up well to re-reading and some fairly heavy annotations. Anyone interested in studying the history of theology (and wishes to save a bit of money), should consider this one.

A very readable translation of Anselm, especially his Monologium on the proof of the existence of God. I guess this was the best that western philosophers could do in the early twelfth century. But the quality of this translation (and good quality printing) make this book worth reading.

This is the best version of Anselm available. It is used in academic circles, but it also easy to read. The english is fluid, and is apparently close to the original (though I've never read the original, personally). Anselm is fantastic, and a really important thinker to wrestle with for a variety of issues. This is a must read for the theologian and/or philosopher.

This book is essentially an expansion of Garner's usage chapter from the CHICAGO MANUAL OF STYLE with a distinct emphasis on correctness rather than the style, workflow, and formatting covered in CMOS. And that's a good thing, as it focuses on helping writers at all levels. Less pedantic (in my opinion, anyway) than GARNER'S MODERN ENGLISH USAGE, and more accessible as a result, it follows a similar structure to that of CMOS. Some may find GARNER'S MODERN ENGLISH USAGE hard to follow because the head entries are alphabetical, and for those readers this book will seem more logical as it is grouped by typical subjects (e.g., prepositions, clauses, subjects, verbs). Other huge selling points are a 100-page subchapter titled Troublesome Words and Phrases, a 32-page Word Index, and an 88-page Select Glossary (I wonder what the Unabridged Glossary looks like). All of these are great aids for less-experienced writers or those who find certain indexing styles particularly vexing (nearly always the fault of the author or indexer, not the reader, by the way, and I'm not being sarcastic in this particular instance).One reason I like Garner's other book is its use of relevant and user-friendly examples. CMOS is not always so generous with such examples, though it is improving. The CHICAGO GUIDE TO GRAMMAR, USAGE, AND PUNCTUATION uses numerous examples in every section, and in many cases it divides them into "good usage" and "bad usage" categories to show both right and wrong variations. I find this much more helpful in explaining usage to others and it should aid comprehension for many readers. Garner also uses word-frequency data to show the prevalence of certain word forms and their lexicological competitors.This book is an excellent reference choice for writers at all levels (editors also will find good examples to clarify usage for themselves and clients). And a word for those who've heard that Garner is prescriptivist—he only seems prescriptivist for those rules that good writers do and should follow to ensure that readers take them seriously. He often points to certain uses that just don't matter so much anymore (e.g., he notes that "hopefully" is still avoided by good writers, but that the differentiation is likely lost on most readers and therefore not so important). And in case you wondered whether all those actors who pronounce "homage" as "OH-MAUGE' " and "often" as "OFT' EN" were just being pretentious—they are (of course I'm biased—otherwise, why would I write a silly review?).And finally (I presume you are cheering), at least Garner had the knowledge and good sense to provide a proper title for his book, unlike those numerous ones calling "usage" "grammar" and "grammar" "usage" without any hint of shame.

Absolutely love this as a companion to the Chicago Manual of Style. It's clear, concise, and pretty easy to navigate, and it offers supplemental examples that the CMS does not. I'm extremely happy with this and the CMS as a style manual. Match it with a good dictionary like Random House and a solid thesaurus, and you'll never need the internet again.

Here is a welcome extension volume to Garner's acclaimed Modern English Usage; together they make an invaluable source of articulate, authoritative, convincing (and witty) discussions of many of the problems that writers and editors of quality prose will encounter.

Garner’s usage guides are invaluable, but it’s difficult to figure out who would want this book. Lovers of grammar will be frustrated, and anyone trying to learn the complexities of grammar and punctuation will be misled. For one thing, Garner muddles the terminology. On the very page (165) on which he defines a clause as “a grammatical unit that contains a subject, a finite verb, and any complements that the verb requires,” he presents as an example of a subordinate clause the word-group “despite my father’s warning not to” (which is a phrase, not a clause, because it lacks a finite verb). Discussing the bracketed word-group “we’re making progress slowly but surely” on page 146, he claims that “but joins two adverbs within an adverbial clause,” but that word-group is an independent clause, not an adverbial dependent clause. Garner doesn’t always have a sure grasp of the parts of speech, either. He classifies “through” in the sentence “I’d like to see the problem through” as a preposition (page 139), but “through” is an adverb in that instance. For Garner, terms change meaning from page to page. On page 127, he defines an adverb as a “word”; on page 85, he illustrates his statement that “it is now widely acknowledged that adverbs sometimes justifiably separate the to from the principal verb” with the sentence “[T]hey expect to more than double their income next year.” “More than” doesn’t satisfy his definition of an adverb as a single word; it’s a phrasal adverb, which he defines elsewhere. Explanations are opaque (from page 143: “The conjunction joins a clause. . . .” Hunh?). Examples don’t always relate to the rules they are intended to illustrate. On page 375, the rule “Use a hyphen to connect the parts of a phrasal adjective—that is, a phrase whose words function together to modify a noun” is illustrated with the sentence “Being competitive, risk-taking, status-conscious, dedicated, single-minded, persevering—it can make all the difference to success,” in which there’s no noun for those phrasal adjectives to modify. Although the book has the imprimatur of the University of Chicago Press, the discussion of punctuation trashes rules in The Chicago Manual of Style, including 6.20 and 6.45 (rules identical to those enforced at The New Yorker). The section on punctuation is in fact the weakest in the book. Even though each chapter discusses common misuses of punctuation marks, the chapter on the slash does not even address the most controversial and disputed use of the slash—to mean “and” rather than “or.” (The discussion of the slash in his usage books is much more helpful.) The chapter on colons never explicitly states that an independent clause must almost always precede a colon. (And he discusses only one misuse of the colon, though in his usage books he discusses four misuses.) One can go on and on. Bryan Garner is a whiz, no question, but this book needs a redo. Buy one of his usage books instead. They’re a better bargain, they’re more comprehensive, and they’re brilliant!

Those who have stayed on this rollercoaster for four books won't be disappointed by the 5th. Dominic and Levi are reunited and their strong connection carries them through the highs and lows of a blockbuster finale: dramatic explosions; huge gun battles; exciting WTF moments; comic dog relief; occasional intense intimate mm sex scenes;...this movie has it all...I mean, this book has it all. There was a time or two that I jumped to my feet at the tension or in surprise.There is violence, with guns, knives, fireworks, fire extinguishers, toxins and krav maga...There are dramatic Las Vegas style extravaganzas of bad guy/good guy fights and crises and the drama...oy, the drama.Professionally written and well edited. Likable smart and snarky heroes, moments of humor here and there, personal demons such as gambling addiction and anger management, and, for some characters, serial killing addiction. Terrorist bombings.Read it, you will like it. Make sure you read the first four books or this won't make any sense at all. Kingsbridge does a good job of just re-hashing barely enough info to re-establish the context, you won't know what's going on without reading the first four.Like the sound of A Chip and a Chair?I can recommend Cordelia Kingsbridge's standalone mm romance/thriller: Can't Hide From MeAlso:Cut and Run Series by Abigail Roux and Madeline UrbanFair Game series by Josh LanyonDeath Meets the Devil series by L.J. The last chapter of Seven of Spades is finally over, and it was spectacular! I so wanted to know the how and the who and yet didn't want it to be over too soon. I fell in love with all the characters that Ms Kingsbridge painstakingly created and nurtured through all five books.While romance between Dom and Levi took a back seat, I could still feel how much they loved each other, the emotional support that Levi gave Dom when cravings hit him too hard, and the feelings of inadequacy Dominic felt when seeking reassurance from Levi. Levi was battling his rage at the inability to see who the killer was and inability to prevent the tragedies in time. Yet after all they've been through Dom and Levi understood each other more, had the kind of trust that was born from pain and betrayal, and were always in tune. Surrounded by friends and family both men found courage and strength to do what needed to be done.The Sin City is in chaos. It's time for the secrets long buried come to light. But while Seven of Spades bides their time, Las Vegas is slowly eroded from the inside by crazy lunatics and zealots. The carnage is insurmountable, and what once was considered home and safety does not feel the same. Levi, Dominic and Martine are racing against the clock to save the city they love.The climax of the story is thrilling, edgy and suspenseful. With the help of Seven of Spades the guys and Leila enter the enemy's stronghold to try and save many lives that are at stake. They succeed but in the end does one sacrifice make up for all the deaths?All the questions are answered, everything that was a mystery is no more. What is left are people who are trying to survive the loss, the lies and the guilt. The city will rebuilt and move on, the culprits will never see the light of day again, and Levi and Dominic are finally able to slow down, to heal and find the peace that Seven of Spades have robbed them of so long ago. A wonderful finale to a splendid series! Bravo!

I've enjoyed this series immensely ... and, as usual when I become invested in the characters, I'm sorry to see it end. But this will definitely be a series I'll read again. I'm not sure how I feel about the reveal: Levi's reactions were strong but there's something that was missing ... not sure I even know what it was ... just a feeling I have about the second 1/2 of the book being rushed. Maybe that's on me: I didn't want the series to end. The prologue was a bit ... odd ... like there weren't enough sex scenes so one last one had to be put in there ... wasn't needed but hey! I'm just the reader. But don't miss out on this series: it truly is excellent and I waited with baited breath for each novel to come out. Just sorry there's not another!

Cordelia Kingsbridge never fails to disappoint. I really hate waiting too long to read the end of a series, so I waited until 16 days before the last book dropped until I started reading. Though I still ended up so enthralled, that I read the first 4 too fast; I still had to wait 6 days for the final volume. She always hits all my favorite novel buttons. This one as especially great, because of the characters. You both love and hate all of them equally when the triumph, and make mistakes. Through the bad times and the good; you root for every character, because they all felt so real. The Seven of Spades even had me tearing up at the end. I could read this series forever, and wouldn’t mind another novel into their lives. Until then, I will definitely reread this series. It will be even more fun knowing who did it.

This was a satisfying end to the series. I’m not going to say anything about the plot, because I might give something away unintentionally; suffice it to say that I enjoyed the ride.But I must say that I was completely disappointed by the production value of this book. There wasn’t a single em dash—instead, there were only single hyphens without spaces around them—so when the “dashes” were in sentences that also contained genuine hyphens, it made things even more difficult. I was tempted to return the book, but I needed to find out what happened. I hope the publisher fixes the mistakes and pushes an update. It honestly took the shine off my reading experience so severely that I nearly downgraded my rating to four stars.

A former teacher, and longtime friend of Robert Kime, ALASTAIR LANGLANDS has worked closely with Robert and his friends and clients to offer a rich and nuanced picture of his achievements as a designer.The Prince of Wales, eldest son of The Queen and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was born at Buckingham Palace at 9.14pm on 14th November 1948.The Prince, as Heir to The Throne, took on the traditional titles of The Duke of Cornwall under a charter of King Edward III in 1337; and, in the Scottish peerage, of Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron Renfrew, Lord of the Isles, and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland.Through the years, His Royal Highness developed a wide range of interests which are today reflected in The Prince's Charities, a group of not-for-profit organisations of which The Prince of Wales is Patron or President. The group is the largest multi-cause charitable enterprise in the United Kingdom, raising over £100million annually.
