I bought this book, because I visited the area in June and want to go back in November. This is challenging wilderness to naviagate, and I wouldn't suggest you do it without a GPS. I too wish that the maps had been more detailed, the Tellico Plains map available through the Ranger station is more so. It is a great book, just was hoping for more knowledge gained, and it basically told me what I already know.

Tim Homan has done a great job of describing the trails of the Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock and Citico Creek Wildernesses. Although the format is more oriented towards a readability style rather than a guidebook style, all the essential information was there and in a clear concise manner. He includes several maps that are useful, but I would have given it a higher rating if the maps had been more detailed.

This magnificent book, now in its fiftieth-year anniversary edition, beckons us, by the sheer fact of its longevity, to learn from history. However, history is not about the past, it is about the present and the future. History is not a book to be read, it is a book to be written. We do not merely study the past, we inherit it. Knowledge of history can protect against the delusions and disillusionments of the current time but often, how we understand the present determines how we understand history. But still, one’s view of history also gives form to one’s political philosophy and beliefs. This process works both ways. A biased our incorrect view of historical events will lead one to a skewed political point of view. Belief in historical myths can lead to a political point of view that is an assault on reality itself as was the case with the Nazis. William Shirer’s book aids in setting the record straight about the ignoble crimes of the Nazis based on their contorted views of, and delusional beliefs about, history.William Shirer’s book is brilliant and should be required reading but we should not flatter ourselves into thinking that once armed with this knowledge of the past that we will be wise enough to recognize the warning signs of disaster and be in a position to act and avert it. Hegel once said that history teaches us that people never learn from history. I think that there is an important insight here, not just a cliché. By this I mean that it is difficult to say that we should learn from history. Each moment in history is distinctive and unique. Circumstances at any given time are different and change with time. At best, history might severe as an analogy that we try to use as a guide for something in the present but analogy is the weakest from of reasoning it is more like a rule of thumb. Arguments based on analogy are weak at best and become progressively weaker as the points of similarity become fewer. History can at most show us some generalities but even these are subject interpretation and endless disagreement. The desire to find cycles, repeating patterns, and lessons in and from history arises from our desire to find and make connections and a realized felt need for connectedness with the past. We like to make connections and recognize patterns even at the risk of false pattern recognition. Historical examples are presented to us with considerable persuasive rhetorical power in the form of imaginative paradigms but we should not be so easily taken in by this. It is hubristic to think that, with the careful study of history, as valuable as that study indeed is, that we learn all that we need to know from the past to guide us in the present and on into future.

Written by a man who lived through the years leading up to the Nazi Party's birth, growth, eventual election to power and all the subsequent insane and inhuman events that followed; a journalist keeping detailed diaries and then supplementing with years of detailed research through vast amounts of other documents, diaries, court records, interviews. Amazing! To read this book is a formidable but engrossing task and the end result is enormous satisfaction that I have truly learned an honest and complete historical lesson. My parents lived through WWII in Latvia, my father was drafted into the Nazi Army to fight the Soviets on the Eastern front and was severely wounded during the occupation, my mother escaped from Liepaja with the fleeing Nazi troops abandoned there on the day Berlin fell. The emotions which this book raised then resolved are indescribable as I finally felt I had learned all there was needed to know about what my parents went through because they would speak none of it. They hated the Nazis, they hated the Soviets, they could speak of none of it.

I wondered at first if I could get through such a long book on history. However, I found that while not "easy" reading it was not the drudgery I have encountered in other such books. Actually it moves freely if you don't spend too much time remembering all the names. The main characters are mentioned enough that they will stick with you. It covered a lot but without spending too much time on any individual topic. It gave me the big picture with enough detail to educate me on a lot of things of which I had been unaware. Lastly, it was interesting that it was a first hand account rather than a look back on history.

What is to say about this book. It should be considered among the most important books written. Well researched yet reads like it should, written by a journalist. The fact that Shirer was there adds to the intensity of the narrative. This should be required reading for any person seeking to understand the how the world can spiral into insanity. Particularly with the detailed accounts of the politics surrounding the diplomatic negotiations surrounding Austria, Czechoslovakia, and the invasion of Poland. If you are interested in the evolution of the fascist state read The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. If you are interested in the implementation of the unthinkable, read The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. If you want to understand how the Third Reich could happen, read The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.

This is a very interesting work -- I can hardly put it down. The problem is that the editors who "prepared" it for Kindle release, didn't. There are entire sections of the book out of place. You go along reading about complex and critical issues, and all of a sudden you are in an entirely different place and time dealing with a completely unrelated subject for a page or so, and then hop back to where you started. It is really irritating. I guess I think it's worthwhile to buy the book on Kindle, if only for the convenience of not having to lug a 1280 page book around, but if you want continuity and consistency, buy the book and skip the Kindle edition.

I had this book in the 1990s and had to give it away when I moved into a much smaller place and was making a lot less money. Now that I'm retired I've begun rebuilding what had been a fabulous library of source-texts about religion along the Silk Road. This book is an absolute must for someone seeking to understand the intertwining evolution of Manichaeism and "Orthodox Christianity." I must be at pains to say that "Orthodox Christianity" as I use the term is the generally-accepted description of those churches not affiliated with Rome in the West and after Islam began making incursions into Palestine and ancient Anatolia, several of the bishoprics - Antioch, Merv, Malabar - were separated from the Greek church which held on in Constantinople and Athens. (The Alexandrian see had become the Coptic Church). Not only did the church in the East have to deal with things like the Nestorian heresy and a predatory Zoroastrianism, they had the followers of the prophet Mani to deal with. The historical result is that some of these groups were Manichaean, others were more or less orthodox, while a third became heavily influenced by ideas from farther afield such as Mahayana Buddhism and Taoism. Professor Klimkeits' book presents material from the Manichaeans, almost all of which had been the provenance of specialists like W B Henning and Mary Boyce. You literally had to dig through vast library stacks to find the books and journal articles published by Henning, Boyce and others; Klimkeits' book spares the reader this digging and presents beautifully annotated selections from the vast Central Asian corpus.

Hans-Joachim Klimkeit is a leading scholar in Manichaeism and the religious history of Central Asia. A more accurate title for the book would of been 'Manichean texts of Central Asia' because this book covers religious, theological, devotional, and historical texts. Most of the languages of the texts are originally from Sogdian, Parthian, Old Turkic, And Chinese texts translated into English. My only complaint is how the book tried to advertise itself by claiming to be a Eastern Nag Hammadi version. Along with that the jacket of the book attempts to portray Manichaeism as a Christian Gnostic group. I require this book as part of the curriculum for my 85 hour prenatal yoga teacher training. I chose this book because of it's ability to educate students in the basics of Ayurveda during pregnancy. I think that the author did a great job synthesizing some very complex material into layman's terms. My trainees always really enjoy this book. I think the postpartum section could be a bit more comprehensive.

There were many tips from this book that I used in my pregnancy. The parts on antithesis diet for specific dosha were very interesting. Some advices were bit unrealistic to follow especially the extensive journaling. Overall I would recommend this book for those future mommies that have interest in yoga,ayurveda and more holistic approach to pregnancy

Has a lot of interesting information that I haven't read yet in alternative pregnancy approaches.

Purchased this book for my Mom, a true green thumb, for Christmas and she LOVES it! She has said thank you several times and recently told me she has to force herself to not read ahead so she can savor it over a whole year, LOL!

A wonderful book! One doesn't even need to be a gardener to enjoy this book. It might even encourage a non-gardener. The writer is very entertaining and has a special gift of humor. The diary format is great.

Sweet little captions or short blurbs about gardening...some funny, some serious, but all gardeners know how true it all is!

I am enjoying reading this book at bedtime because the author was clearly enthusiastic about gardens and gardening, and so am I. I concur with another reviewer who pointed out that the author was very well-to-do (tips usually take the form of "have xyz done," assuming you have someone to work for you), so most of us would not relate well. What bothers me most, however, is that there are a few racial and gender statements typical of phrases and attitudes in the 1920s that are quite offensive now. In fact, when the first instance cropped up, it affected my whole attitude to the writer, although I know he was a product of his time. The author's comments on the cosiness and security of home during bad weather or bad times and other domesticalities do stand the test of time, though, and I've enjoyed some laughs from his comments on visitors from the city.All things considered, you may want to check the book out of a library and see if you like it - or can tolerate the occasional un-PC lapses.

If you like gardening memoirs, this one is pretty good. Some of his comments are dated, but he is generally good-humored.

It is a timeless piece of work for any serious gardener and will keep you company through all sorts of gardening trials and tribulations s well as successes and conquests. I have given many copies to my most beloved friends.
