I kept waiting to get to the "strategies/exercises" section which seemed to take awhile but once there, I found some useful information. This book had some good points along the way and I think it has the potential to be helpful to many (including finding your voice and conflict resolution), but it also misses the bigger picture - the how and why we've gotten to this point. The media - television, internet, news, social media, advertising, entertainment, our "systems" (education, healthcare, politics), and the search for "more" outside of ourselves is a place to start in order to find real answers. If girls, and humans in general, can get past the control system and realize they are being manipulated and that divide and conquer really is a strategy, maybe there's a chance for all of us. To thine own self be true. Kindness, empathy, a strong value system, spiritual strength, critical thinking, living with love - these are the elements that make strong girls and people. What are we emphasizing as important in our society? Real self-worth is intrinsic. I also think it's important to take into consideration cognitive functions - an introverted intuitive feeler is going to handle and process situations extremely different than an extroverted sensing thinker. This book doesn't take into consideration personality differences between girls, or people in general.

Very important book for parents to read but also women in general I'd say. Really interesting and thought provoking points made in this book. I checked it out from the library first, then had to buy it.

I've read similar books before. It talks about an important topic, so the main thing bothered me was that it was overly simplistic. It's a great book to introduce you to problems with gender roles, but if you're someone who's familiar with a lot of the research it has way too much fluff.

Wonderful book. I recommend this for women of all ages. This has helped the way I carry myself in the professional world and in my personal relationships. Well worth it, and I plan to read it again.

After months in therapy whining about my relationship, thinking I could change things while sticking around, I am convinced it is time to take a break from dating and try to reorient myself in the hopes of ending up in a relationship based on **mutual** love and consideration -- something I have never had before. If you are even considering the possibility that you are in a codependent situation, buy this book. Read it in the bathroom, or shower, or in a grocery store parking lot if you're dating someone who would be suspicious. Just do it. It's a surprisingly affordable "holy crap" moment you will probably not regret.

"The Human Magnet Syndrome: Why We Love People Who Hurt Us" was one the most important books I, and I imagine for most codependents and possible emotional manipulators as well, will ever read in their entire life. This is because it reveals important truths about why we behave the way we do. It's like suddenly becoming aware of the Matrix and realizing "oh that is how and why things turned out the way they did". And as the author says "It's Never Too Late To Be Who You Might Have Been", so there is still hope.Rosenberg, he who himself endured many emotional mantiplutive codependent relationships throughout his life, goes into how both emotional mantiplators and codependents are made, how each of them behaves and views things, how they are drawn to one another, how their relationships unfold and lastly briefly sheds light on how one might go about, or helping someone else, heal from these wounds these relationships have left on these individuals.After reading this book I personally, myself being a codependent, reliezed that I had a deep sense of self hatred rooted in childhood that caused me to seek "other approval" even at great cost to myself. I began to understand how that further caused me to be a doormat, people pleaser and ultimately has been holding me back from full potential and how it had been attracting the wrong people into my life. I feel many others who read the book will feel similarly.The following line, my favorite from the book, highlights this epiphany well:"Go to the mirror now, and look yourself in the eye. There is a child inside of you, the child you used to be. He or she is you –a frightened child who is frozen in time because of harm suffered and endured at a young age. You know you desperately want to be released from the shackles of self-doubt, self-loathing and fear. You, and only you, can make the determination to walk down a new path in life that will certainly bring you to happiness, serenity and improved self-esteem. The decision is yours: Live with limited risk but perpetual relational dysfunction, or risk everything and choose to begin the personal/ emotional work that will bring you to healthy and satisfying mutual love –true love. Make the right choice."I also began to see things from the emotional manipulators perspective, and how they were made. It allowed be to realize that they too were often hurt in childhood. While this didn't excuse their actions, or make me want to continue reltionships with them, it did allow me to forgive them (for my own sake) and helped me moved on no longer held back my toxic grudges and memories of them.So whom is this book for and how should it's knowledge be used?Codependents, as Rosenberg points out, are much more likely to be able to heal and benefit from the insights of this book. Emotional manipulators, again as Rosenberg points out, are much more difficult to reach and heal because of how they were wounded and how the view and behave. So if you come to this book, or come out of it, trying to fix a emotional manipulator your unlikely to find much success. However if you are a codependent or are trying to help one you know, or one of the rare emotional mantipulators who is willing to change, or are using this information in a mental health practice or are just trying to help a family or friend (with not too much personal investment on the outcome) or lastly you are just curious to see if you may have been affected by some of the concepts in this book then I highly recommend this book. But I don't recommend that you spend your time trying to fix other people (unless your in the mental health field or are going into it). Spend your time wisely!The only real complainant I have from the book is that there is isn't much advice, or at least should be more, on how to heal from the abuse. I believe Rosenberg said he's thinking about writing another book on that and that this book was more of a "why" book rather than a "how to heal" book. As such your going to have to work on the healing stuff more on your own. With a little more on how to heal and move past the abuse this would easily be a 5 star review and the book would feel more completely. As is though it's 4 out of 5 stars.Other books I recommend as a compliment to this book that fit into the theme of the book and help compensate for it's lack of healing advice are: "No More Mr Nice Guy" (for guys) or "Why Men Love Bitches: From Doormat to Dreamgirl" (for girls), "The Selfish Gene", and "The Solution to Social Anxiety". Also check out Melody Beattie's (who basically discovered codependency) books on the subject such as "Codependent No More".I am extremely grateful to Rosenberg for his life's work. I came across one of his youtube videos by chance and was blown away and took a chance and bought this book. And I'm lucky I did. It has helped save and change my life for the better. So many people will go through life never realizing the root of their pain, suffering and issues can be traced backed to early childhood experiences that fundamentally altered the way they approach relationships, social interactions and how they live their life in general. Many as such will never move past or heal such pain. Never realizing their full potatial. Realizing why and how this damage was done, with the help of this book, will likely lead to a great life change of your own.Buy this book, you won't regret it!

Oh my... this book was amazing!! Thank you Ross Rosenberg!!I am a student finishing up my AA degree in human services w/ an emphasis on certification for Chemical Dependency Professional... I WAS going to work as a substance abuse counselor however, the past two year, after my own awakening in my codependent ways of being, I began working a recovery program in Al-anon. I read everything I could get my hands on with regards to this topic and devoured all my college level text books on the subject of addiction ... because the narcissistic addict was the thorn in my flesh...I began to understand and fully understand after reading this book, how we attract the opposite of what we are... I was a serious codependent. I never realized I learned to HATE who I was.. to avoid an abusive, rage-a-holic father, I employed roles and ways fo being to anticipate what was coming so I could avoid being beaten... It never worked but I learned how to read people and please them to avoid being abandoned rejected and orphaned ...I have had a few significant relationships in my life. All were with narcissist once using addicts and a few in active addiction. I was unable to see the pattern or see anything in me that was bringing them into my life.. just wasn't the time. Two years ago, it became time to wake up and change...Today, this book has helped me understand the continuum of how and who attracts who... a -5 codependent will attract a +5 narcissistic personality, BPD, or addict narcissist ... addicts are always narcissistic.. they literally have a love relationship with their drug of choice and USE people ... there are 3 stages to addiction: early, middle and late stage and just going sober doesn't change the narcissist personality they have created in the disease; WHICH is why it is imperative for them to work an HONEST recovery program with a sponsor in some type of 12 step program. It is a guide to renewing their distorted, diseased, brain and learn to become awake, aware and actively recovering and changing.This book discusses everything necessary so you will learn about yourself and your patterns as a codependent. Unfortunately, as stated in this book, most narcissistic types will NOT be helped because they can't ever see that they have done anything wrong.. their programming is such that they are perfect, grandiose, without fault nor flaw... they can't even begin to dig down deep in to the cesspool of their past upbringing to address the deep trauma and abuse they encountered at some point in their development. This is what drives them to self-medicate, or just live the illusion that they are perfect and everyone should bow down worship and adore them "god complex' types.I completed this book in one sitting .. it just spoke to exactly what I needed to read at the moment.. filling in so much information to all that I have read over the past 2-4 years when I was 'dabbling' in considering if I was in need of help until I realized I WAS definitely in need of help.Today I believe through the program of Al-anon and working with a sponsor as well as reading and studying such books as this, I have entered in to a level of healing that I could not have entered in to any other way.. I came to see that I needed to be restored to sanity because I was INSANE as a result of the narcissistic addicts I had allowed into my life... the only way to get better was to get away from them, isolate myself for a season and put the focus totally on me... nothing a true codependent does with out dis-ease...I began loving myself. Accepting myself and all that has happened and currently happens.. I live in acceptance and I forgave and rapidly forgive myself daily. Perfection and control are both illusions and I live genuine and authentic these days. I have good healthy boundaries in place and have eradicated close ties with anyone in active addiction or not working an honest recovery.This book is MUST reading MUST MUST MUST .. if you are a codependent and if you happen to be that rare addict narcissist who wants to truly find peace and serenity in a recovery lifestyle. I think the book said that many addicts move out of the narcissistic +5 when they stop drinking and work recovery ...All in all, I will and have already recommended this book to people in class and working their own recovery program. I am a Christ follower trying hard to manifest His love. However, I can't give what I don't have. After feverantly praying to God, I was led to Mother Teresa and this book. I am listening the audio version of this book for probably the 8th time now and still can't get enough of it. It felt like having my soul cleansed with each read. Mother Teresa knew love, specifically Christ's love. This is by far the most influential book I have read in my life. It will probably remain so. I am eternally grateful.

I absolutely love this book! I have lupus, and at times find sleep impossible, and hurt too badly to even hold a book or my Kindle. However, all I have to do is turn to the audio version and plug it in. Soon, the calming voice of the reader has me drifting off to sleep. It is an amazing book of wisdom and guidance. My family thought it odd that I would download a book from someone if a different faith. However, she is the human version of Christ's love extended to those that cannot help themselves. Oh that I could serve others in a similar manner. Highly recommended addition to ANY believer's book collection.

Presents a magnificent example of how one person's life, based on total selfless commitment and deep agape love, can achieve what armies of constructionist politicians can never do. As the world flipped out over the death of Princess Diana, Mother Teresa's death went comparatively unnoticed - as they say "timing is everything". Her achievements mark her one of the great women in history but not a peep from the feminists. Says a lot about the world really. This book put right my total ignorance on the life of this remarkable woman and can't be recommended highly enough for anyone wishing to observe the face of God.

Mother Theresa is an incredible person! Walking the walk that Jesus instructed us. This book is an inspiration. Her perspective on poverty, prayer, forgiveness. etc. gives the reader a view that we all want to imitate as she has done for her love of Jesus and God... Definitely going to purchase another.. Whats not to love about Mother Theresa.. A true Saint

This is the third time I've purchased this book. I keep a supply of Mother Teresa's books handy to give as gifts to friends/family members, or sometimes even strangers, who are going through dark times. This, and other books about and by Mother Teresa, had helped me to grasp the true meaning of love and of life, and helped put my feet back on the ground through some very difficult times. I'm happy to say the books have helped my gift recipients also!

This is an excellent book that talks about many different aspects of a spiritual life. Mother Teresa writes in a very simple and understandable way to walk you through her very simple path to God. She emphasizes actions as a way of showing love and getting closer to God, but not actions within themselves. It's a connection with God which made her able to live in such conditions and work with those whom everyone else rejecting and whom she knew would probably die. And when she obeyed God and did what he asked, she became closer to him.This book does not tell you to drop everything and work with the poorest of the poor, that was her calling and not necessarily yours, but to drop everything and to give it all to God. She sees Jesus in every person so she can't help but put them before herself. The last chapter is a short interview with her and was quite insightful as well.

Contrary to one of the other reviews on this site I found this to be an excellent structured approach to learning XSL. The book however is not a reference guide as much as a step by step tutorial. Read cover to cover the reader should gain a good indepth knowledge on the subject. The content is light enough to keep you interested but not so light that you're left guessing and the later chapters (while not necessary to gaining good XSL knowledge) cover a lot of advanced topics such as XSL-FO.PS. No where on the back cover or in the contents are topics such as JAVA or CGI mentioned. The reviewer who expressed dismay at lack of coverage in these areas should have bought a different book if that's what they wanted to start off with.

After a comprehensive search through the jungle of available literature on the much talked topic 'XSL', I - a total beginner to XSL, X-PATH, X-POINTER, X-LINK - decided to purchase the book 'Just XSL'.My objective is:- to be able to develop professionally written XSL with all the necessary surrounding languages where necessary (such as X-PATH, X-POINTERS, etc.)- to know 'XSL surrounding languages' where necessary or to be able to evaluate what is why, where necessary under which circumstancesMy goals are:- to learn the principle structure of XSL- to learn the correlating languages going along with XSL- to systematically understand all necessary syntax, tree structure and whatever should be involved- to practically apply studies to 'real-world' examples under different degrees (beginner, intermediate, advanced) (eg including CD, etc.) for XSL and necessary surrounding languages- to know how to incorporate XSL into or with web based languages (eg Java, CGI) and database development- to be provided with suggestions on available tools on different platforms (for Mac, Unix, Linux, Windows, etc.)My learning targets have unfortunately not been met by this book, unfortunately. Although the books talks a lot, it lacks of a structural approach and has thus not met my learning goals. All in all, I am obliged to get another book on the topic so I am left with the starting situation again: which one? I hope it will not be another waste again ..... Students always have a limited budget.

Touching stories, laugh-out-loud moments, deeply moving and full of insights that add a new dimension to the age-old truths. It was a word fitly spoken in time and I won't be the same. This is no dry spiritual how-to. It's a new way to look at the Beatitudes and how God meant for them to impact your life. Instead of separate statements, Lucado makes a case for their being the sequential path of "God's radical reconstruction of the heart".Whether you want a fresh touch from God, a reminder of His love, or a way to find joy in the midst of this life, you need to read this!

I've never looked at The Beatitudes in the same way that Max Lucado describes them in The Applause Of Heaven. Lucado writes that they are a succession of stages in our walk with God and our growth in Christ. What a marvelous book it is, reminding us that we are limitlessly loved by God.

An excellent, easy-to-read book on the Beatitudes from the book of Matthew.

not up to some of the other Lucado books I've read. too many homey stories, kind of shallow.

Cute touch and feel book! On the plus side, great small size for little hands. On the down side, many of the textures are pretty much the same (monkey, puppy, kitten) and some are not so obvious (the zebra, the elephant or the snail). I was expecting a good variety of textures and the textures to represent a bigger portion of the page, too bad it wasn't the case.

I gave 3 stars because my son enjoys the book, however I feel that several of the pages are cop outs. Like with the elephant page, the "feel" part is the water droplets which are pretty much the same texture as the book itself. Same with the snail trail.

I agree with a lot of the complaints. There are some pages with just some sparkly, smooth paper. There are very few words (and the words there leave something to be desired). However, this was a favorite for both of our sons. And it has held up for three years despite a ton of abuse. The boys loved the textures and we just supplied our own words to describe the pictures.

I purchased this book for my cousin's one year old son. He absolutely adores this book. The animals are ones that kids know and love. He is still at the age where everything goes into his mouth, and I wanted to make sure I got him a book that kind of doesn't matter.I do wish that some of the animals in this book had more of a touch and feel like the other animals. For example, the tiger has sparkly grass and doesn't feel much different than the rest of the page. The page says "licking his nose", maybe they could have done something with a tiger and his nose. The zebra I couldn't even tell where the the touch and feel was at on him, there are tiny dots, that I am guessing is suppose to be the touch and feel.Other than some of the animals and their lack of touch and feel in this book, it is very cute. Simple enough to introduce books at a very early age, with pages that should hold up very well to a 1 year old.

My 1yr old loves touchy-feely books and animals so this one seemed perfect. Small, but thick book with sturdy pages and a squishy cover...so far it's held up well with the baby. She loves the different textures on the pages and we like that it's not your typical animal selections. Has rabbit, zebra, snail, tiger, monkey, and more with different textures for each and some slightly more interesting text, like how the tiger is licking his nose. It's a great way to practice animal noises, some of her favorites being "Ooh, ooh" for the monkey and growling for the lion. :)

I bought this for my sister's new baby. The book is very cute, with a few great sensory pages. Many of the pages don't offer great texture, and some don't have any texture that a small child would notice at all.- Physical quality is exactly what I'd expect from any board book. The pages are thick and durable. The cover is a little puffy.- The cover has fuzzy areas on the rabbits, just like the inside pages.- Some pages have nice soft fuzzy areas, even though they're all similar a child wouldn't mind.- The fuzzy areas are smaller than I'd expect for a children's book. Many of them are so tiny that they're hardly there at all.- Some pages just have weird cutouts with shiny material... not "touch and feel" at all - just areas of metallic paper. Misleading.- A baby / small child would probably enjoy it a bit still, since they usually enjoy animals in general...- And it was pretty cheap, I don't regret buying it - it could just be improved with more tactical / sensory areas.

Similar to the numbers book, there is not enough to feel. I bought this because research says at 6 months babies are interested in touch and feel of objects. Too much foil and raised nubs and not enough fuzzy stuff. For example, on the elephant page, the feel part is foil water droplets supposedly sprayed by the elephant. To me, the message is lost. The page says elephant but the feel is water? Maybe when he gets older it may be more interesting.

The pictures are lovely but the "fur" is a bit strange. The fuz on the bunnies on the cover is very different than the fur on the bunnies inside. The book does not have a furry kitten, only a FD faintly fuzzy yarn ball, which is odd. Odder still is the decision to include a snail slime trail, a starfish with some very faint bumps, and a goldfish with the same texture as the starfish.
