I read the brief background of the Shakers it included and became fascinated by the Shaker history and life style. The Shaker Story by Flo Morse may not be a large book, but it provides a wealth of information about this little known and oft misunderstood religious group. Some people confuse them with Quakers. Others think they were simply manufacturers of furniture. Morse sets out to fill in the gaps.The Shakers were founded in 1772 and thrived into the 1800's. They believed that you didn't have to die to enter heaven. Rather, heaven could be found right here on earth if you lived a simple and virtuous life. Shakers were required to live in villages, where they were totally self-sufficient. Couples had to disavow marriage vows, and men, women and children lived apart from each other. They did interact during worship where they sang and danced (or "shaked"). They produced seeds, herbs, hats, cloth, thread, brooms and furniture, and sold these items all over the country. The Shakers were also prolific songwriters, and they composed over 30,000 hymns and songs. Music was an important component of their worship. Only one of their songs, A Simple Gift, has gone mainstream. Aaron Copland included it as the main melody in his well-known classic, Appalachian Spring.You might wonder what would entice adults to live a celibate life. But this was often more appealing to women-rather than marrying an abusive or undependable husband. Women had an equal say in village life, and some villages even welcomed blacks as equals. Many unwanted children were dropped off at Shaker Villages, where they were raised to adulthood.The Shakers started to fade after the Civil War for a variety of reasons. First, factories started mass-producing the same products the Shakers made by hand, but for a fraction of the cost. Since members didn't procreate, new generations were not born to replace older generations as they died off. And public orphanages meant less unwanted children coming to Shaker Villages. One by one, the villages were dissolved and closed. Several have become National Historic Sites, and it is fascinating to see how Shakers lived, worked and worshipped. Still, there are a handful of Shakers in the United States (less than a dozen at last count), although the Shaker glory days appear to be over.So, if you can't visit a Shaker Village (such as Pleasant Valley Shaker Village in Kentucky), pick up Morse's book. She provides a good look at this fascinating group.

Tells the story of a faith that originated in Europe and was brought to the United States in the 1770's by nine people. Their faith spread out mostly in the Eastern United States with several communities. They did not believe in marriage and took in orphans to raise. B/W drawings appear of their worship and their beliefs are explained.With the Industrial Revolution their ranks shrink to just a few that are left. Includes a map of where their settlements were located and the years they were active. Insightful.

The concepts of heavens and hell. he talks about the earth and in many different aspects. Many things that people take as Christian values do not seem to be the case after reading this book. It sheds a light on the many aspects of our belief system, spirituality etc. Must read if you want to have a better understanding of Christianity and its roots. This book contains; before Socrates' trial, his trial and after his trial.

The Last Days of Socrates is a essential reading for anyone with an interest in philosophy or Western culture. What I find so amazing about and most ancient philosophy is that the questions it raises are still relevant today. For those readers not familiar with Plato, the author of the four dialogues that make up the book, he lived during the fourth century BC. Plato is credited with founding the Academy in Athens, which was essentially the first institution devoted to philosophical research and teaching. Many scholars claim it was the prototype of all Western universities.It's interesting to note that, Plato was a student of Socrates. And much like Jesus Christ, we have no written documents from Socrates himself. Strangely, this isn't the only similarity between Socrates and Jesus Christ either. Whatever the reason, it seems that many people in modern society believe that the philosophy of the ancients is not relevant to them. I believe the contrary and I'm not sure we're any wiser in the modern era. In fact, I'm quite sure that we aren't. Yes, technology has changed, but life's most important questions have not. And we still don't have answers to them. If anything, there are more distractions and noise that keep us from pondering the mysteries of life today.Anyway, this book is a collection of four early Socratic dialogues: "Euthyphro," "Apology," "Crito," and "Phaedo." Translator Harold Tarrant explains in his introduction that most scholars do not believe the events depicted by Plato actually happened, but rather, they are Plato's depiction of Socratic philosophy in action. It's also worth noting that the Socratic dialogues were not unique to Plato.In the "Euthyphro", Plato writes: "Consider the following point: is the holy approved by the gods because it's holy, or is it holy because it's approved?" This dialogue essentially examines Socrates' questioning of religion, more specifically, holiness or piety. Holiness was one of five Greek virtues. It seems that the purpose of the dialogue is to explore the definitions of holiness by asking the difficult questions. We are left to consider whether Socratic doubt is more truthful and more valuable than unreasoned religious dogmatism. "The question which excites the Socratic mind is how anybody, man or god, can recognize any action as an instance of goodness. What is the standard, and in what terms can we express it?" On that question it must be said that "Euthyphro" fails to provide an answer that suffices.In the "Apology", Plato writes: "It is because they enjoy hearing me examine those who think that they are wise when they are not; an experience which has its amusing side." The classic scenario in a Greek tragedy is when a person of high moral principle is confronted step by step with a bad situation from which there is no escape, oftentimes through a conflict with people of lower moral principles. As the "Apology" demonstrates, the art of writing a tragedy was not lost on Plato.The "Apology", then, is Socrates' self-defense at his trial. Socrates, using his rhetorical skills, talks of the ills apparent in the Athenian government. According to Plato, Socrates did not live an ordinary and quiet life. He didn't care for the things that most people care about: making money, a comfortable home, high status, and political appointments. He certainly was not afraid of dying. As he said, "Nothing can harm a good man either in life or after death, and his fortunes are not a matter of indifference to the gods."Socrates supposedly said: "It is only too likely that neither of us has any knowledge to boast of; but he thinks he knows something which he does not know, whereas I am quite conscious of my ignorance. At any rate it seems that I am wiser than he is to the small extent, that I do not think that I know what I don't know." Accordingly, this book really ought to be read by anyone seeking a liberal education.

As Socrates abstained from recording his philosophies, we must thank Plato for having the insight to preserve Socratic thoughts for posterity. As a student of Socrates, it seems that Plato, through his own writings, attempts to preserve the memory of his well respected teacher.In The Last Days of Socrates, Plato begins with Euthyphro and we see the Socratic method in action. Socrates and Euthyphro discuss the nature of piety, and through a serious of thought provoking questions, Socrates argues for what he feels is the proper relationship between Man and God.Next, Plato discusses the trial of Socrates by the Athenian aristocracy. Again, we see Socrates using his rhetorical skills in illustrating the hypocrisy and prejudice pervading throughout the Athenian government. Socrates discusses what role a good citizen should play in government. He announces his being a "gadfly" on the hide of the establishment, and we also find Socrates exposing his own intelligence by claiming that he, in fact, knows very little. The Apology is by far my personal favorite section of the book.After Socrates conviction, we find him discussing the morality of obeying or breaking laws in Crito. He meets with one of his close friends and the two discuss Socrates' options in regard to his death sentence. Here we see Socrates espouse the belief that it is acceptable to break an unjust law, however, one must also accept the consequences for breaking said law in order to preserve the stability of society.The Last Days of Socrates tackles many complex issues which are as relevant today as they were when first committed to paper in the 4th century B.C. This should be standard reading for any introductory course in political theory, and a must have for anyone interested in philosophy or ethics.

This first novel is a real page-turner! Set in the mountains of southwest Virginia in the late 50s-early 60s, it’s told in the voice of a young man remembering his adolescence during a simpler time, remembered now for its racial strife. Stony, the narrator, is in fifth grade in 1954, the year of the Supreme Court decision to integrate public schools (Brown vs. Board of Education). I remember this well - I was finishing my freshman year in high school, which turned out to be my last year in public school since our Virginia county decided to close its public schools and open a private academy for whites only. My county was south of Richmond but I know the mountain counties fairly well and find this novel to be entirely true to its location and its time.A. D. Hopkins has succeeded not only in conveying a historical time and place, but in creating believable, involving characters whose personalities come to life in Stony’s account. You like some, you love some, you detest others, but all are full of life. Yes, this is a growing-up novel in many ways but the focus is not on Stony and his growth process, it’s on all the people involved in events in this small town - the sheriff, the deputies, Stony and his pals Jack and Roosevelt, the girls that he lusts after and also those that he befriends. It’s also about the folks who join the Klan and those who abhor the Klan. It’s about racist attitudes, about how they sometimes change and they sometimes go really bad. Stony is a fundamentally good kid who gets into a lot of fights — due to hotheadedness, due to an overactive sense of honor which is very typical of Virginia, and sometimes due to just plain youthful dumbness. It’s fascinating to watch him change.This novel does not telegraph its punches. It can seem at times as though it’s a picaresque recounting of the adventures of Stony and Jack - but there’s a very strong plot thread running throughout and their escapades do not fundamentally distract from this. There’s a lot of info about guns here - that might turn some off but again it’s very typical of this time and place, that boys and men were quite familiar with firearms and learned young how to use them. And without adding spoilers, I’ll say that this is not a book that focuses on blood and thunder. The emphasis is humanity, and how human beings of all sorts of beliefs get in trouble and sometimes get out of it.In short, a great read. I had trouble putting it down. My only criticism would be that sometimes there was a bit too much description in earlier chapters - I wonder how someone in their thirties or forties would remember exactly what two girls were wearing in class on the day Jack Newcomb arrived - but this is a small matter. Stony’s voice gets more and more real and immediate as the novel progresses.In the divided political climate of 2019, it seems to me that everyone, no matter their political views, would enjoy and benefit from reading this book. If you are a city type, and have no idea how small towns functioned back in those days, their politics, their social strata, you’ll learn a lot from this. No matter what you think about gun control, you’ll learn from the role they play here why so many have fought so hard to be able to keep them — and yes, the dangers they have always posed in society. You’ll get a lot of respect for honest lawmen and some insight into how local politicians, playing the political game, have to operate in a small place to be able to get anything done against the fixers of that time. Fixers aren’t new, folks.But it’ll be a fun ride! Highly recommended. I look for more from A. D. Hopkins!

This book was actioned packed much like a choose your own adventure book. It was hard to put it down until complete. Glad someone wrote a book about teenage adventures and addressed race. This book show that children and adults can be agents of social change if they choose to act ethically.

September 1959 in the small town of Early, Virginia. "Stony" Shelor is almost seventeen and just starting his junior year of High School. Enter new kid Jack Newcomb who models himself after a beatnik character from the TV show Peter Gunn. The two boys, both a bit nonconformist, become fast friends.Jack's decision that they should become private detectives leads to a lot of time spent around the local police station learning the trade. The cops couldn't be happier having two volunteers to do some of the nonessential duties (like cleaning & filing) and the two boys become sort of like mascots to them.It's all kind of endearing in a way but Early, Virginia isn't Andy Griffith's Mayberry so when trouble comes... and it does... there's more to it than good ol' wholesome fun.The Boys Who Woke Up Early is a coming of age story set in a time when the world (at least The United States) was having some "coming of age" issues of its own. While the first half of the book deals with the boys' Hardy Boy-esque adventures the second half gets deeper into the social changes affecting their world (mostly racism and associated issues).I thought this was a pretty good book. There's a certain suspension of disbelief required at times as it goes from silly to serious and makes you question how anyone could let these boys get into these kinds of situations but, then again, it was a different time.While the story is about teenagers in 1959 and the early 1960s the author strives to present a sense of realism. Meaning there are racial slurs, some cursing, and one or two cringe worthy moments when seen from a modern perspective. I wouldn't call it salacious or gratuitous but it's there.Bottom line: The Boys Who Woke Up Early is a good read. The time is 1959 and the place is rural West Virginia. Stony, the main character is starting his junior year in high school. His main concerns are girls and trying to stay out of trouble and girls. He isn't part of the cool group so when a new student moves to town, Stony and Jack quickly become friends. As friends they have more than an normal friendship. Jack wants to be a private eye so he and Stony start doing volunteer work at the local sheriff's department and end up trying to help law enforcement solve a robbery case. Their adventures include interactions with the people in the hallows who run the local still and a run in with the local KKK. As they grow up, will their adventures during this year change their perception about current life especially the views on racism.This is a well written novel about life in the late 50s when America is starting to change their views on segregation and violence. It's a coming of age time for Stony who has to form his own views about what he sees around him. I enjoyed the main character of Stony who changed significantly in the novel as he began to notice more about life around him.I read an advance copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

This book is not typical of so many kids books on the market today. It relates information about other cultures, friendship, and learning in a way that does not speak down to children. Rather, this book shows how people around the world live, and illustrated that the values and ideas that make good neighbors and friends are universal. In addition to informative (and yet very kid-friendly) text, Be My Neighbor is packed with photos that will intricgue children of many ages. I purchased this book for our three-year old, and though it is intended for slighly older children, he was drawn in immediately by the photos and the discussion about what makes friends and neighbors special. I recommend this book highly and am very pleased to have found it.

Great book! The pictures are great and the message is as well. Great for kids learning about their community. The reading isn't very easy, so it is a book to read to kids.

Good look on the world.

I don't know what it is exactly, but my daughter LOVES this book. We read it over and over again every single day- and she's only 14 months old! We don't read all of the text because she is too young to sit still for that, but I read the captions on each page (which still flows like a story), and we talk about the pictures. I'm currently ordering a second copy (she hasn't learned yet to be careful with paper pages and has ripped most of them), and I'm ordering a few other books by the same author.

Probably one of the best written and edited technical texts ever compiled in the Java space. Well recommended for anyone looking to understand how Spring Batch can be used to effectively standardize how data is processed in a batch manner. What makes this book especially effective is its organization, ample supply of examples, and small diagrams effectively placed throughout which remind me of early O'Reilly texts and far surpass what is provided in most recent entries of the "In Action" series from Manning, although I continue to recommend the "Spring in Action" and "Java Persistence with Hibernate" (renamed from "Hibernate in Action") classics which frequently accompany me at my desk.Content is broken down into three parts: (1) "Background", (2) "Core Spring Batch", and (3) "Advanced Spring Batch". The first part discusses the concept of batch processes, introduces a case study that will be revisited throughout the book, provides working code examples that illustrate simple concepts (my first proof of concept used this code as a base), and discusses the anatomy of a batch job. The second part comprises the bulk of the material, and covers configuration, execution, and furthers the earlier discussion of job anatomy by walking through all of the different options that Spring Batch provides to read, write, and process data. The third part covers an abundance of more advanced features such as controlling how jobs are executed, integrating with other frameworks such as Spring Integration, and testing.This book is not only a great aid for an initial exploration of Spring Batch, it also serves as a handy reference guide and first go-to source during construction alongside the excellent online Spring Batch reference material. Although you will likely want to explore some of the examples shared by the community for more complex scenarios, these two sources provide most of what you will need to get the job done effectively. From my experience, be forewarned about what the community has to say about using Spring Batch with JPA and Hibernate, areas that are not covered well in this book. My use of straight Hibernate 4, for example, to write data using Spring Batch 2.2.1.RELEASE, the latest stable version as of July 2013, required a small amount of custom development work. And while JPA capabilities are more complete out of the box, JPA configurability options and implications should be explored before adoption.

Good overall introduction for newbie to grab Spring Batch essence quickly.

There are not many Spring Batch reference books available, and I've read some or all of the few I have found. I found this one to be the best. Well organized, good examples, easy to read.

This text is very helpful if you're on a project implementing Spring Batch. Has lots of details not present in the product documentation.

From the books I have read until now that covers some specific Spring Module, this one was the best one. It is written very well, a lot of examples (real examples), explained in depth the Spring Batch module. A must have book (also as a reference) for any batch app developers. Highly recommended.

Summary: Spring Batch in Action is a flawlessly written book. The topic of batch processing in Java often gets a second class coverage and this book puts an end to that. The book is very visual; filled with logical diagrams (UML and other formats) the book instantly becomes a referential manual for anyone willing to assail the topic of Batch Processing with (or even without) Spring Batch.Written in a sequential manner on which every chapter builds on the previous chapter the book aims to tackle the topic of batch processing with Spring Batch. However, although the book is aimed squarely at Spring Batch, the reader who is less enthused about Spring in general, would benefit greatly reading about batch processing in the context of a `separation-of-concerns (SoC)' concept.Chapter 1: The book begins with a thorough definition of batch applications. From data volume, automation, reliability, robustness, and performance; all topics are explained in a manner all developers with at least an intermediate understanding of data processing should have no problem following. Once the initial topic of batch applications is introduced the book quickly introduces the title framework; Spring Batch. It runs through the architecture of Spring Batch and how it enhances the existing SpringFramework to perform batch processing while Spring Batch itself utilizes SpringFramework to perform its internal tasks. This symbiotic relationship is indeed fascinating and the book does not miss this point. Once the formal introduction to Spring Batch is complete, a quick example is shown.Chapter 2: The second chapter starts with the formal `getting started' in the world of Spring Batch. As part of the reading and writing product data, chunk processing is formerly introduced with diagrams and a forward looking statement about later chapters which will delve into more detail about chunk processing. If you have never performed batch processing in this manner, this chapter alone is mind-bending as it introduces a simple concept that will forever change your personal view on how batch processing should be done. I personally believe if the book stopped right here I would still consider it a major success. An honorable mention in this chapter is the quick overview of ETL (Extract, transform, load); this is a topic worth mentioning in a book of this caliber and the authors did not overlook it. Overall, Chapter 2 is a quick overview of what Spring Batch can do and how a developer willing to use Spring Batch can quickly delve into developing an application with Spring Batch.Chapter 3 starts defining the domain language for batch processing. It quickly introduces the developer how to configure the Spring Batch infrastructure. At this point the job repository is introduced and the Spring Batch database support is shown through an example utilizing the H2 database; to those familiar with Spring, this section should look very familiar as the configuration itself is nearly identical to a typical Spring database configuration application context XML; of course, the repository configuration would be new to anyone not familiar to Spring Batch, but the XML configuration file will still remain very familiar despite the Spring Batch namespace. At this point as logic would have it; Spring Batch Admin, would be a nice addition; well, the book does exactly that; it shows the admin interface. It then continues to explore the anatomy of a job. Linear and non-linear job flows are explained and demonstrated through XML configuration steps via the job/step/tasklet tags. This chapter also delves into job instances and job executions. The formula for a job instance shown in the book is simple (JobInstance = Job + JobParameters). Lifecycle of a job and job execution is briefly explained followed by the topic of running multiple instances of the same job.Chapter 4 delves into batch configuration by exploring the Spring Batch XML vocabulary; first the Spring Batch XML namespace and Spring Batch XML features are introduced; then the chapter naturally delves into details on how to configure the job and the steps and how the configuration hierarchy flows in Spring Batch. Nested job configurations are also demonstrated. In this chapter you will also learn about configuring streams as well as transactions and the job repository. Advanced topics are introduced at the end of the chapter with a quick introduction to various Spring topics such as scopes and Spring Expression Language (SpEL). If you have never delved into those topics before, they are worth a look as they apply well beyond Spring Batch.Chapter 5 demystifies the launching process of Spring Batch jobs. At this point it is worth mentioning that, you are really stepping into a new territory. The book is now into what I would call "Part II" - you have learned the basics; you have created a few jobs; configured them and launched them. At this point the book takes a further refinement on topics already covered before. And so this chapter takes the launching process over different approaches; via schedulers, command line or embedding jobs in a web application. The as part of the launching concepts, Spring Batch launching API is revisited in greater detail followed by an overview of launching solutions. Then, each solution is explored in greater detail; the command line execution model by first introducing the already provided CommandLineJobRunner. Job schedulers are nicely introduced. The topic is kept to the three most popular implementations of such concepts. The quintessential cron is first followed by Spring scheduler (which in Spring 3 supports cron syntax) and as the last and far more advanced option; Quartz Scheduler. This section explains the cron syntax in great detail and the reader would be well advised to use this book as one of the main references for such topic. The chapter continues on the topic of integration with a web application. For a reader who has never integrated a Spring-based application, this chapter is well worth it as it shows how to integrate Spring Batch in a web application. Taking Spring Batch out of the picture, this topic applies to any Spring application. To end on a high note, Chapter 5 describes the process of stopping Spring Batch jobs gracefully; using the JobOperator via JMX or via StepExecution.Chapter 6 continues the refinement process by delving deeper into the `reading data' process. The data reading concepts are first introduced to the reader. The Spring Batch related reader Java interfaces are displayed with an introduction to the ItemStream interface (an interface well worth reading about). Once the concepts are out of the way each approach is introduced; reading files; at first the supported formats are demonstrated and how they are handled internally as well as how the configuration is performed to each type of reader. XML formats are also explained with a word of caution on DOM. Once file readers are out of the way, databases follow; first starting with simple readers such as JDBC item readers such as the JdbcCursorItemReader. In this section the JDBC support classes built in SpringFramework come in handy and they are demonstrated as well. ORM item readers are introduced as well and examples using HibernateCursorItemReader and HibernatePagingItemReader are shown. At this point the chapter turns and explores other input sources via ItemReaderAdapter, JmsItemReader or custom readers.Chapter 7 refines the concept of writing data; starting with the concepts moving on to file writers using the FlatFileItemWriter and StaxEventItemWriter; the concept of writing to file sets is introduced at the end of the file writer section. The chapter continues with a section on writing to databases, just like the `reading data' counterpart introduces the JDBC classes such as the JdbcBatchItemWriter as well as the ORM classes such as the HibernateItemWriter. The adapting existing services for reuse introduces the ItemWriterAdapter class which allows delegation to another service. PropertyExtractingDelegatingItemWriter is another useful class and it is demonstrated in this chapter with examples. JMS logically has its own writer; JmsItemWriter is introduced in a short and powerful example. The SimpleMailMessageItemWriter is demonstrated to show that you can also send emails using Spring Batch; this is a very useful feature of Spring Batch. Chapter 7 continues with the custom item writers which as a developer you would have to write if the built in writers do not suffice. The book demonstrates how one might go about implementing such writer using the Spring Batch ItemWriter interface. Advanced writing techniques are reserved as the closing arguments in Chapter 7; in here the concept of chaining writers is introduced and how a developer could use the CompositeItemWriter to implement complex writers.Chapter 8 focuses on processing data by enforcing and placement of business logic in the processing phase. The `in-between' item processor concept is introduced by revisiting existing code from previous chapters. In here the transformation and filtering concepts are introduced and applied to data. A short example implementation through the ItemProcessor interface is exemplified at first; while the Spring Batch built in processors are exemplified later in the chapter (ItemProcessorAdapter, ValidatingItemProcessor and CompositeItemProcessor). As part of the data processing the item transformation process is also introduced. Filtering and validation receive a good overview and the example code is very easy to follow. To simplify validation Valang, a validation language, is used; this is yet another nice addition and once again shows how to create a collaborative project using various open source projects in Java.Chapter 9 - bulletproof jobs takes the concepts of robustness, traceability and control to a great introduction as part of the batch processing.Chapter 10 - although transaction management is built into Spring Batch it is well worth the effort to learn what it takes to have such functionality as part of the batch processing and how to override the defaults in case of such requirement is necessary. This chapter introduces the concept of transactions via a primer; it then moves on to Spring Batch and transaction management. Common pitfalls are exemplified with common applications to JMS ad well as databases. A worthy mention is the idempotency example in the context of batch jobs.Chapter 11 - handling/controlling execution is about controlling the jobs flow in case of failure or unexpected events. As this is a part of the Spring Batch step-based architecture, the book takes the reader through various paths of control while explaining various subtleties such as batch status vs. exit status. The chapter then moves to sharing data between steps and what techniques can be used to enable data sharing between steps. As the chapter winds down, the book explores the externalization of flow definitions to enable reusability. The final topic of this chapter is about choosing how to end jobs after the execution based on various conditions.Chapter 12 - Enterprise integration is a complex matter and in this chapter the book first starts to explain what this topic means and what the challenges are as well as what different styles of integration exit in accordance with the "EIP book" (Enterprise Integration Patterns: Designing, Building, and Deploying Messaging Solutions ISBN-10: 0321200683). Once the introduction is out of the way, the topic zooms into Spring Batch and enterprise integration. At this point another Spring project is introduced; Spring Integration. The project gets a quick overview and then the combination of Spring Batch and Spring Integration is exemplified in great detail. It is worth mentioning that Dave Syer is mentioned by name at this point; Dave is a great asset to Spring batch and he has demonstrated numerous times how Spring Batch can be integrated with Spring Integration (this is also mentioned in the book). The RESTful submission of jobs brings over Spring MVC as well the RestTemplate introduced as part Spring 3.Chapter 13 - Monitoring is a part of Spring Batch and this chapter introduces the monitoring concepts and then moves on to demonstrating how to access batch execution data and then demonstrates monitoring using various examples via Spring Batch Admin and JMX.Chapter 14 - scalability is important and the book delivers a special chapter dedicated to this topic. Before tacking scalability, the chapter first explores performance improvements. Then the scale up and scale out concepts are introduced and then the build in features of Spring Batch are explored. This is a very attentive chapter which requires the reader to pay attention to the advice given. Multithreading examples are provided via the Spring task executor which is a very powerful functionality provided by Spring. As threading is a topic often confusing this chapter dedicates a good part to multithreading. It then moves on to remote chunking using channels with Spring Integration. Partitioning is introduced to demonstrate parallelism as part of the data processing. The chapter ends with a comparison of patterns and a bit of advice how to choose the best data processing pattern.Chapter 15 - testing is an important part of any development process. This chapter first focuses on the basics of what it testing is and how it can be performed using JUnit and Mockito. Every phase introduced in the previous chapters is given ample coverage.Appendix B: Setting up - this is about getting you up to speed to develop your projects using Spring Batch. The appendix does a brilliant job at quickly introducing Maven and its plug-ins relevant to Spring Batch context. Once that part is out of the way, Spring STS is introduced and a quick tour is given. At the end of this appendix one should feel ready to develop Spring Batch projects using Maven and Spring STS.Appendix B: Spring Batch Admin - this tool is an essential piece of the puzzle in Spring Batch development and as a consequence it gets an entire and thorough appendix dedicated to it.Conclusion: I would highly recommend this book to anyone willing to explore the topic of Batch Processing; the book is filled with meaningful examples relevant to the real world. To make matters better the code is properly divided by chapters and built with maven. This allows the projects to be easily imported using any modern Java IDE (Eclipse via m2eclipse, IntelliJ and NetBeans). By the end of this book, I became more aware of what it takes to develop batch applications and how to develop them using Spring Batch.
