The Adventurer's Vault 2 has the same set back as all the 2.0 materials. It is about 60 pages shorter in content than the first Adventurers Vault. This would be an okay things if WoTC didn't charge the same price for both editions.The content that it covers is the same of the other minus mundane weapons. We only have magic items, in this Edition. I would have liked to see some stats on some more exotic weaponry.The new magic items added to this edition are; tattoos, wondrous lair items, immurements, and item sets.Tattoos, these are actually covered fairly well. The made a whole lot of them and gave a lot of options.Wondrous Lair Items, this was also covered fairly well and gives options to all level ranges. Makes a slowly modified and grown guild hall with magical awesomeness in your reach.Immurements, due to the power of there items I feel that they were fairly well covered. I think it would have been nice if WoTC could have found a way to make at least a few paragon level ones.Item sets, this is by itself is not a disappointment. There are many different sets covering all levels, from heroic-epic. And each level has three or four different sets. Where my problem began is with the introduction of group sets. I was quite excited by the idea, but I was severely let down due to the fact that there was only 5 sets total introduced here. I would have been fine if WoTC had just left out the Group Sets and given us more regular item sets. But with the introduction of the group set and then not fully covering it I think they made a grave decision that left me wanting instead of being satisfied.All in all it is a nice addition, but it could use more in general. Add about 4-6 more pages and we'll be gold.

One thing I dislike about 4th edition is books like these where all they do is add a million new items, 99% of which you will never get to use. One problem is there is too much emphasis on the higher levels. While I am a limited player, not being able to play D&D as much as I would like, it's always been my experience that it's very difficult to get to level 10, let alone the higher levels. I know some who have gotten their D&D characters to godlike levels, but also many who never get to 10 or more. Why? Probably because it is much more of a challenge to DM the higher the players get. The players also get tired of perhaps having 2 to 4 sessions or more before they can level up. Mostly, it appears many people just get bored with "that adventure", and opt to either have somebody else DM a new one, or they stop playing and opt to do something else entirely.

With Stranger Things coming out nows a better time than ever to pick up a copy of this book and get your next adventure going!With all the added weapons and treasures its defiantly a must have for your collection!

This book is quite thin in contrast to many other d&d books out there.It contains a decent amount of armor and weapons but everything else has a small selection.It retails for 29.95 in stores and I would not recomend that price at all, I infact would be upset if I paid that for something as thin as this. Decent content but very little of it.If you decide to buy it, buy it on amazon, no more for 10. Picked mine up for 6 + 3.99 s+h.The prices are constantly changing on d&d books, just be patient and there will be a week when this or another book goes down in price and get your hands on it then.Definately not essential for any campaign, but if your a collector of 4th edition like me, you gotta get your hands on them all.

One thing it took me a long time as a DM to realize is that while the story keeps the DM interested the players need loot to keep them interested. If you want some cool ideas for stuff to give the players this is a great resource, and I think that this is the book htat has some loot that is sentient, which while not suuuper original is a great campaign hook.

A DM must.

A treasure trove of loot that will turn any party into greedy murder hobos. Items easily convert to 5e.

This is an extremely political book on art history by a professor of the classics. In particular its an attack on Kenneth Clark and the well known BBC documentary "civilization". Her lines of attack are rather predictable. Clark is too patrician, he is too focused on European matters, he excluded underrepresented people (in particular women), created a vision of art where the only women present were "society hostesses" and "the virgin mary" (p.207). She hates the narrative of "one damn genius after another" she says he represents. She outright says that Clark saw the work as superior europeans and inferior barbarians (p. 207). She is so political that she cannot even trust that herself looking with her "white western gaze" at art outside Europe She offers him backhanded praise at the end but at the same time carefully explaining to us that she was only 14 years old when he saw it and of course not understand all its various flaws.While Kenneth Clark attempted to create a narrative covering western civilization which he clearly said at the time was a "personal" narrative, Mary Beard offers sort of random tourism lacking any real narrative at all aside from constant repetition that she is a being of a higher morality than a Kenneth Clark and has a superior understanding of the world. Nothing really ties the pieces of the book together aside from her constant complaints about dead white men and her complaints about a selective group of cultures.Often in the book, she is speaking outside of any expertise that she has and often offering blue-sky opinions about matters which are not her subject area. There are also what to me are rather ugly and stupid statements. On p. 117 for example, she presents to the reader the idea that the destruction of religious artwork on religious grounds is "far more than brute vandalism" and that it "may indeed reflect an artfulness of its own". For all her virtue, she doesn't understand that many people would not tend to see it that way. That when one goes to certain historical sites and sees heads broken off statues or thousand-year old paintings on a wall scratched out with swords/knives, that it represents a tragedy and bigotry rather than a style of art. While she looks with contempt at her imagined evil white men, she seems to see glory in religiously imposed restrictions on what art can be.She demands that we see the story of Islam's historical conquests and destruction of art in places like India as a more "nuanced" history. That while they were carrying out a wave of destruction, they were at the same time fascinated by what they were destroying. That when they were looting art and carrying it out of the countries, that was really "appreciation" of it. She talks about how the art defaced in a Hindu site converted to a mosque has been valued through its "re-use" and that the humanity of the art still comes through in the broken pieces. She offers the same view on sites smashed historically by iconoclastic movements in Europe.While she sees smashing, defacing and destroying art as a form of artistic expression, she is almost overtly hostile to classical european art in the context of greek and roman works. She sees those praise those sculptures and other works as :"offering a ready-made standard against which to judge the art of other cultures - sometimes a distorting and divisive lens which is hard to escape.". In other words, liking classical european art is the same as attacking the art of other cultures and being "divisive".To me, that is incredibly simplistic. She would have made a valid point in perhaps 1910, but I'm not sure today who exactly she is talking about. Who looks today at non-European art simply through the lens of classical greek art? And are we to blame and shame an entire artistic tradition based sometimes on the opinions of people who lived in the 1700s? And what would we find if we applied those same standards to the art of other cultures? The author doesn't really believe in uniform standards. One can look at violence and ethnic cleansing in Myanmar today and see that Buddhism can be be driven by ethnic hate and extremism as much as any group in Europe.. All this begs the question of double-standards and if the author's tendency to apply different standards to different traditions isn't simply a new form of what she calls "western gaze" but directed toward self-loathing rather than self-superiority.There are no end of problems with the book. She speaks out of her depth often and offers what amounts to a tourist view of things she doesn't understand. She is political in a constant, nagging sort of way. She has no narrative to speak of other than being a derivative counterpoint to what Clark called his personal view. And while she is critical of Clark for his presentation of "one genius after another" she is guilty to a degree of presenting people who fit into diversity narratives one after the other.Overall she would have done much better to come up with her own narrative and personal vision of art rather than disrespect and ride on the backs of others. She also needs more discipline and organization as a writer. As in her book from a few years past on Rome, there seems to be a tension between producing a conventional book and producing something overtly political to impress her friends. In general, she wasn't the right person for a book like this. Quite frankly none of the three people selected by the BBC to do the new version of "civilization" had the necessary background in the appropriate material. The whole thing illustrates the problem that the people who have the greatest contempt for someone like Kenneth Clark are still unable to better than he did back in the 1960s.

Mary Beard is a very thoughtful observer of modern human culture. Her SPQR is her best work, but this new book offers many multi-dimensional observations about world art not often thought or spoken by a single author. Well done.

I rather enjoyed Mary Beard's "How do we look". It's a pretty fast-paced overview of various art objects throughout history (not connected in any particular way other than Mrs. Beard's line of thinking, it seems, which doesn't make it any less interesting), all the while raising a ton of "meta" questions along the way. If you're a serious art history buff then you won't find it too engrossing unless you are especially interested in this the author's opinion ; however, if you're just an interested reader with an open mind, this book proves to be hugely entertaining and makes you go "Ah, yes! I forgot about this place!" and deep in thoughts about it you go...Some views of the author can be a bit out there for a conservative reader (but I appreciated her down-to-earth view on certain things), so it's important to keep an aforementioned open mind. In the end, it is her take on the subject. It's very amusing, however, to find an unexpected outlook on something and think about the way this conclusion was made."How do we look" will take only a few hours to read (plus time to think about and/or discuss things - the controversial story about Aphrodite led me to some interesting debates). It's full of photographs of art pieces or places, sometimes long forgotten (it's always a pleasure to re-discover the beauty of a certain work you never got to see in person and filed in the back of your mind for later); and it is by no means presents itself as a monumental work on art history. It seems that it was written more as a thought-provoking entertaining non-fiction, mostly for those who have interest in art, human history and like to ponder on things.Happy Reading!

I recently re-watched the original 13 part series Civilization from 50 years ago. Twice. Its fantastic! It is of course 50 years behind some of humanity’s greatest scientific accomplishments, particularly archeological & historical, but it is a well articulated masterpiece of one man’s vision. I have since watched the new Civilizations series several times as well. Not bothering with the dumbed-down American version, but absorbing the much richer original BBC version. And, it is as fantastic as its predecessor! I especially appreciate the depths Professor Beard takes us. In the episodes and in this book, she makes what could easily have been a dalliance with pretty objects into revelations of their importance. Her intellect and expertise is a gift to us all. I recomend this book whole heartedly. (As I recommend the many other books she’s written). And having been fortunate enough to have seen most of the objects she describes with my own eyes, I recommend visiting them as well. As she points out, they have a lot to tell about us.

Beautifully imagined and thought out, with a multitude of examples and fresh perspectives about art and women (in art, history, and society). I felt compelled to buy it when, reading an article about it in NYT today, all the interviewer asked Beard was her opinion about Instagram photos of modern pop stars and the Royal Family!

Ms Beard has written a simplistic book with no coherent point of view. I was embarrassed for her - her photos of herself alongsidevarious works of art made her book look like a tourist's guide rather than a serious intellectual effort. The book lacks depth andI was left none the wiser after having read it.

At last, another story from Kathleen McClure about Fortune. This is the third of them and it is wonderful! Like the first two, it can be read as a stand-alone novel. (I know because I read the second novel first myself.). However, each story deepens one's understanding of the planet and enjoyment of the characters so I think you will want all of them. After all you don't find this quality of writing every day! As I started reading Fortune's Fool, I thought the same thing I always think with the Fortune chronicles. "Why can't more people write like this?" The writing is smooth, the adventure is intriguing, the plot is tight and moves quickly and you won't find better fight scenes anywhere. (Read the author's profile to see why.). The characters are interesting and likeable. The female characters are strong, not a shrinking violet among them. What sets these books apart for me, though, is the author's subtle humor shown through the snarkiness of the characters. (Think about the humor in the "Indiana Jones' movies, and that is what you get here.) With this book, I also realized how much world building has gone on. With my favorite authors, I get a sense of entering a familiar space and again meeting people I like. I had that same feeling with Fortune's Fool, I just sank back and relaxed, smiling as old acquaintances made an appearance.

I enjoyed this book. There was action, jokes, and drama, all mixed together well enough to keep things interesting throughout.

If you've read the previous books from Kathleen, you'll love seeing all the characters again. If not, get ready to meet some neat, quirky and fascinating characters. Gideon is especially great as he is someone who gets into these seemingly impossible situations yet finds a weird and/or unusual way and triumphs. I love that he has a pet draco, which is like a little flying dragon, that perches on his shoulder, works as a lookout and warns him of danger. You'll also love other characters entering - Gideon's old flame Dani, his teenage apprentice Mia and grouchy Tariq with his lovely wife Sameen. Once you pick this book up you won't be able to put it down, it keeps you interested and on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend this story - it is a great read!

What a dilemma!It is one thing for Gideon to undertake looking into various disappearances in Nike but when Gideon is also asked to look for the husband of his erstwhile and still very hot looking love interest, Gideon is somewhat in two minds about that.But, as facilitator the formidable Gideon and his drake is making progress in gaining the respect of the citizens of Nike and Gideon is nothing but professional about it, after all. But, as it turns out, it is also not going to be as easy as he thought. Besides which, it is also decidedly dangerous.However, in this specific book. Fortune's Fool it is young Mia that steals the show and my heart.The relationship between her and Gideon is really fuzzily heartwarming.Kathleen McClure really has a winner in this series of Fortune and I can hardly wait to see what is next in prospect for this duo. Enjoy.

Another rousing adventure on the planet Fortune, hurrah! Many plot strands deftly woven into a swiftly-moving tale that carries the reader along to a satisfying ending. Elvis rules -- sure wish he could come and live with me! Looking forward to the next novel in this series! If you haven't read these yet, what are you waiting for?

I've bought my fair share of this series--and although I am self-taught, after so many years of studying Manga it seemed like everyone kept shoving the same information in my face. 'Amazing Effects' however, blew me away. It is very informative, and explains in great detail about composition, dynamic & panels from creation to perspective and how to use it to create interesting manga.It had examples of 'bad' and 'good' manga. Even if it's not the prettiest style I've ever seen, it gets the point across and is extremly helpful to beginners and intermediate-advanced artists alike, especially if you like me have trouble with perspective! This book has a lot to offer, and was the best find amongst the books I have bought recenlty. I know I will be using it time & time again.Only problem I had with the book:- The book reads left to right,- The manga examples read right to leftAnd there are a few instances where the examples are characters/text who read right to left. So it took me a few reads on certain pages to gain my bearings. But this book is still a great opportunity!

This is very informative book that goes into great detail regarding composition and creating dynamic and interesting panels for your manga! Easy to read with the topics covered mostly in manga story format. It offers lots of examples between non-interesting layout and interesting manga layouts throughout the book. More specifically: composition, character portrayal, voice portrayal, panel design, and manga portrayal.The information in this book about composition of your drawing can translate to when you draw pin-up pictures. Otherwise, this book is for the person interested in perfecting their manga story-telling techniques. There's tons of info in this book. If you've paid attention to whats in this book, I have no doubt you'll be chucking out interestingly laid-out manga in no time.All in all, this book focuses only on creating dynamic and interesting scenes and if you want to learn anything else like toning, this book won't help you. The artwork isn't exactly the prettiest but it's the info the matters. I wouldn't exactly call this edition a keeper book as once you know the info, you can't use the book for anything else even for reference. So I suggest you check it out in the bookstore first and determine if it's for keeps before buying. Otherwise, great info, and a recommended must-read for those who are already familiar with creating their own manga and want to add a little more "oomph".

I have to say this book is definitely one of my favorite HTDM's!It goes over how to create dramatic, fantastic scenes and presentations of your characters, and using every single part of the manga page (the "bleed" of the page, speech balloons, sound effects, angles) and much more to your advantage.It goes over designing the characters a little as well.Definitely a great book, but definitely for people who are skilled artist to begin with.

I had one of these maps for a previous trip to Oslo, and found that it was the only map I needed or used for my particular tourist purposes. I love the way they're organized (with their unique fold-in design). Now that I'm going to Oslo again I got the update, which means I can pass on my previous copy to my traveling partner! This is the best walking-around map for orienting a person who is staying in Oslo and going to some of the highlights, the ship museums and the Vigelund sculpture park among others. This time I'm taking the train from the airport into Oslo and this map contains useful information to help me with that adventure as well. It's a very useful, colorful, easy to understand map of a limited-focus area and an excellent value for the money.

Great map. It's very convenient to have this map, even with Google Maps, as phones can act funny, and it shows important places so you can plan your day out without even taking out your phone or laptop. Also, if the phone dies, it is great to have a backup for safety. Especially in Norway where you'll be hiking and walking all day to see all the beauty.It folds up to a tiny little space but really offers quite a large map of the city that any tourist could appreciate. Definitely 5 stars as I used it a lot, and then a friend came into town who took it from me and used it almost exclusively to get around. Nowadays it's great to have something like this so you can leave your phone in your pocket and enjoy life.

Good map, has most streets you need. Nice size. Did rip when wet. Better transportation map (larger, easier to read) available at the visitors center for free, but I used this map a lot to get around by foot during my 4 days in Oslo.

Nice compact map (5 maps actually) of Oslo that folds to the same size as a passport cover. Tiny writing required wearing readers for my aging eyes but all the major attractions are covered. Our hotel had a free map of the city but this was nice to have and easier to manage because of its size.

It was the right size for my purse and helped me get around. What more can you want?

These are great little maps to have when visiting unfamiliar cities so you don't have to always use your phone data to navigate your way.

After a week in Oslo, I love this map. It had the needed information and was in a really easy to use format. It fits easily in a back pocket and doesn't require sloppy folding or fiddling. This is th one to use.

This is a great little map for any tourist, but it could use a some local train information (like a London tube overview) because the Oslo train lines are often much more direct and useful for accessing most of this wonderful city's main attractions.
