I'm just learning from this book. Although I could read music in the bass clef before, I'm learning to read in the treble clef for the first time, plus I've never played a wind instrument before. The instruction in the book is solid, but there's only one problem: The melodies for practice appear to be written to accommodate the fingerings being learned in the lesson and have a bizarre other-worldish quality. The frustration comes from the fact that when you're learning a bizarre tune, you have no innate sense of what it's supposed to sound like or if you're playing it right.Instead, I would recommend "Recorder for Beginners" by Susan Lowenkron or "Do It! Play Recorder" by James O. Froseth. The reason these are better is that they get you into playing real music right away. The learner may not know all the tunes given for practice, but the songs at least sound enough like music we've all heard before that the learner can judge more easily if he's off base and also start to feel how the tune should sound. These books find traditional tunes to fit the fingerings you learn, while "My First Recorder" considers the fingerings first and then gives you bizarre sounding exercises to fit them.

3 stars review is probably not fair, since it appears to be a fine book, I just feel like title is bit misleading. I definitely wouldn't make this first music book you buy for your child. I would strongly suggest that your child knows how to read notes and understands concepts of rhythm (4/4, 3/4, 2/4 etc. ) before purchasing this book. Once you have that covered, book appears to be doing good job in teaching how to play recorder.For example lesson 2 introduces concepts of quaver, half a bit and eighth notes. Which quickly became overwhelming for my 6 yrs.old. But as I said before, if your child understands basic music concepts, this is probably good book.

This is a very simple and rudimentary book but I think it is a great thing. This book is perfect to test your very young child's readiness to play. It took a few introductions to see what age each of my two children were ready to learn. This book isn't going to be the best for older children, naturally talented and adults. It's incredibly easy and doesn't go over the full range of notes, sharps, flats, naturals and playing in different scales but that is ok. This book isn't going to overwhelm your young child or push them too fast making them feel discouraged but they will be playing Mary Had A Little Lamb by page 14, a classic beginners tune that comes at just the right time to really boost their interest and confidences. I played through this book as an adult before even thinking about using this with my kids. I wasn't impressed with the simple excercise tunes but I grew to appreciate them after seeing how my child consumed them and how the overly simple excercises were exactly what he needed as a 6 year old. I suggest you get a recorder and learn along with your child, be a visual example to them, and introduce small scale excercises with the notes they learn as they learn them, learn how to properly clean our their recorders, how to tell when terrible sounds they emit is a result of condensation build up, loose fingers, or over blowing the note. By the time you reach the end of this book, both of you will have a better understanding of what level of material to go from here, if your child can self teach with the help of books and youtubers such as Sarah Jeffery, or if they would thrive in a class, or if they are going to drop the instrument entirely.I am personally a fan of the Alfred books and use them for several instruments but Hal Lenard books are just as great.If you are a parent wanting to introduce the recorder to your child, I would suggest with the simple cream Yamaha soprano recorder. It's cheap, comes with the cleaning stick (we use baby wash cloths for the swab) a bag and a fingering chart and most importantly you can look into the bottom and you can visually see if there is condescenation build up and where it is. Clear recorders are also fine but make sure they are ones that can be taken apart and not one solid mold. The solid mold ones are more difficult to reach in to clean and you will likely be doing more full cleaning in the beginning while your child breaks the instrument in and is learning breath control. The wood ones do sound much better but save that for something exciting to work up to and after they can play and recognize when it's wet and where it is. You can't just wash wooden ones in your kitchen sink like you can with the simple Yamaha recorders. Have them start and end practices with scales of the notes they know and get a better feel for proper fingering, have them go through and voice out the notes of the music and excercises before they play, praise, and get excited with them. Take turns playing and singing the words with them with this book. They may have no problem moving onto other books and self teaching after this one but you may find that you want to continue this with them, they need the guidance, or they may simply thrive more with the interaction and praise.Don't get this for your tween or teen but if you have a 4- average 9 year old. This is a great start. If you know your child can handle more in depth books then go for it.

This is not a good book. It doesn't explain the musical term it uses.. The musical pieces are too short to really get a feel for the song. Most of the pieces used for practice, I've never heard of, and so couldn't tell if I was playing the correctly or not. And last but not least, it is an incomplete book; it doesn't cover F, much less sharps and flats. It also doesn't cover the full range of notes need to play any real music. This book is a waste of money. I am currently working my way through, "Alfred's Teach Yourself To Play Recorder". So far it is a better book.

I'm working through this with my 8 year old. I find this book and a recorder are a great resource for helping to acquaint kids with an instrument. The book teaches notes and rhythm in an easy to understand way. My daughter is playing easy songs with just a few notes notes so she can feel she is accomplishing something with each lesson. She likes practicing her recorder and is proud she is learning music. This is also a good way to gauge interest in learning an instrument without buying a piano or some expensive instrument.

Why you should read this book: The Christian publishing world doesn't sell near the percentage of mission books as other kinds of books. Though disappointing, it's not that surprising, as the mission field often seems far from our own experience. However, God's heart is to build His church continually, and in all places.Richardson goes to those who have no gospel witness at all. He chronicles not only his trials but his amazing success --which came about in the oddest of ways. Great violence threatened to overtake the people he was working with. I won't say more, for to do so would be to spoil a great climax.I didn't give this 5 stars because I felt the book moved rather slowly until the end. It is readable, but it would not be honest to call it a page-turner.One caution after this. Richardson hints (and later writes a book stating explicitly) that every unreached culture has a "redemptive analogy" already built into it. The missionary task then, involves finding this redemptive analogy and using it to unlock the people's hearts. Although that seems to be the case in Peace Child, it is a stretch to say that God a)has provided a redemptive analogy in every culture and b)one must find it in order to maximize the power of the gospel message. The gospel is powerful by itself. One not need be anthropologist, nor an insightful sociologist, nor a brilliant detective, nor even a spiritually discerning half-wit to bring the Gospel in power. "Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God." Mission work is good work and real work. If unique ways of illustrating the gospel are available, we must, by all means use them. But to expect that we must find a specific redemptive analogy within every culture in order to unlock their hearts for the gospel (or that God has planted one knowing that in the future a missionary would come and find it) --this is conjecture."I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation." You need not be a brilliant missiologist adept and discerning redemptive illustrations from culture to successfully plant a church among the unreached.

A very engrossing book, and a quick, light read- I finished it in basically one day. I loved how Richardson made his characters- real people- come to life in his description of the Sawi before the coming of Europeans and Canadians. Telling the first third of the book in second person Sawi-perspective is an effective literary device that allows us to really understand such a foreign culture from en emic (insider) perspective. The contrast of the two cultures is also engaging- I found myself often laughing as the Don and the Sawi tried to understand each other.I would have liked some way to track the different characters of the story, as there are so many they often get confusing. And it would have been nice to hear more of the mission work of Don's wife, Carol, as she was doing a lot, but you hear little of her story, or the story of the Sawi women from their perspective- something that would naturally need to happen from Carol's engagement with the Sawi. But it was exciting to hear these redemption analogies enfleshed, and to see ways that God's words can be brought to a people from within their own understanding, just as He came to the Hebrews, Hellenistic society, and the barbarian European tribes of my ancestors. I finished wanting the stories of Sawi life to continue.

A very thorough and exciting book by missionary, Don Richardson, as he struggled to explain God sending His son to make peace for us.......After reading this book I recommend getting the disc, Peace Child, which will give you the video of actual happenings....reenacted by the natives of New Guinea and the Richardson couple. Amazing!

WOW! This has all the elements of a thriller. What courage these missionaries had to face! What a wonderful Lord we have.

Usually I run from any faith based books as usually the authors use it to spout their personal beliefs but this book stuck to the facts and made no effort to convert anyone. Just the story which has healed my damaged faith in the church. Apparently there really are good God fearing people whom are doing very good humanitarian work. I have never read a better missionary story than this. Made me cry it was so beautiful. Now I want to be a missionary. Bless all people like this author who has done a great service to humanity!

This is a real life account of a U.S. missionary working in an area of very primitive Indonesian tribes whose identity was bound in tribal fighting. The missionary was baffled at how to break through to the tribes and get them to cease the fighting and killing. How this eventually came about is the story of the peace child and the story of God's involvement through His crucified and resurrected Son, Jesus Christ. This is a fascinating, fast moving, and thrilling story.

Well written and wonderful insight into this primitive people. Certainly not a fictional book in any sense. The profound effect of true Christianity made on them is amazing. Parts of the book are not for the weak of heart. The redemptive analogies are worth the book.

My 6 year old boy loves these books! He asked me "Do you know who my favorite author is?", I answer "Troy Cummings", and he says with a big smile "You know it!". He also has read the first 15 or so of the Magic Tree House books, and he likes those, but he gets much much more excited to read the Notebook of Doom series.He started to write one of his own notebook of doom books... so this has definitely encouraged him to be more creative. The monsters aren't that terrible, but the books made him nervous a few times, and it was a good conversation starter for how monsters are not real, and how being scared/nervous is healthy, and what it means to brave/courageous.

I feel like it has pretty hard to find reading level appropriate books for my son that he gets excited about. When I found these Notebook of Doom books, I knew I had a winner! My son loves these books. He has all but one in his collection now. This series is tied for 1st (with Fanny K Stein series and Dog Man) as his favorite books to read. We started reading these together when he was in 1st grade, he started reading them more on his own entering 2nd grade & is now entering 3rd and has been reading them 100% on his own for some time now. He connects with the characters and LOVES all the silly situations they get themselves into. I highly recommend these books.

It arrived yesterday on release day, and we couldn't put it down! Absolutely wonderful addition to the series. A big surprise inside! My kids and I love The Notebook Of Doom!

This was another fun read for me and my 6YO. We love this series and seeing the characters being developed is really fun. He's already excited for the next book even though we don't know what it is or when it will come out!

My kids (ages 6 & 8) love this series. This is the only series that they will occasionally remember to ask if the latest book is out yet. They get so excited when the latest book comes in the mail!

My six year old says "It is awesome! It's just awesome, yo!" We have read all the books in this series and pre-ordered the next one. Enjoy!

All of the Notebook of Doom books are a must read! My grandchildren loved them and it inspired them to write their own journals!

While this book says the same thing as a million books on professional success and the same thing as another million books on entrepreneurship, I'm giving the combination 5-stars since it is a fun and useful read with a few new frameworks (such as Plan ABZ). Here is the gist of the book:1. (Problem) The macro forces of globalization and technology means you can not rely on your employer for a lifetime of employment and learning.2. (Solution) Given this new reality, you need to run your career like a startup runs its business.3. (How) Here is how to act like a startup:a. Never rest on your laurels or give up - hustle (but don't be a hustler) and persevereb. Pay attention to your competition, striving to own a niche they cannot or do not servec. I have been a student of personal leadership and found that this title effectively describes insights and strategies for the current state of entrepreneurship and career development. I was immediately sold on the value of this book when I read the use of the idea of being in permanent beta, that we are all a work in progress. The book continues with additional gems of wisdom, chapter after chapter. I could go on, but it would best for you to discover and enjoy.Within the first chapter, I stopped for a moment to immediately order another copy, sent to my daughter, who had just graduated university.

Amazing book and provides great motivation for pursuing your ultimate career goals - I recommend for anyone right out of college or grad school

On page 85 of the book the authors say "The fastest way to change yourself is to hang out with people who are already the way you want to be." I am unable to hang out with author Reid Hoffman, co-founded of LinkedIn, so I chose the next best choice ... read his new book.I did not learn any huge aha's from this book, but it did confirm some principles I either practice or have recently learned:- Every entrepreneur or business owner must be able to finish this sentence well: A company or customer hires me over other professionals because __________________.- The best Plan B is rooted in Plan A but allows you the ability to shift direction. For example, Plan B could be starting a side business while still working on Plan A. I'm applying this principle in 2012 as I prepare for retirement in 2013.-Plan Z is your backstop if Plan A & B fail.- Lots on connections on LinkedIn are very important to serve as resources on Plan B & Z.- A trait of successful Broadway shows is the people behind the show is a combo of seasoned vets PLUS a smattering of new people that bring creativity and questions.Page 143 says success begins with an opportunity. An opportunity is like the snap to the quarterback in football. Without a snap, there is no chance for a touchdown.This book was a snap that I plan to use to score several touchdowns.

This book was truly motivating. Mr. Hoffman did an amazing job in motivating fellow entrepreneurs and ambitious people. What was great was that he broke up the book into different segments and really focused in on the point he was driving home in each segment. Needless to say, I felt his biggest push was on networking. He emphasized this greatly throughout the book but especially in the chapters that discussed networking. He didn't fail to stress the importance of networking and speaking with other people constantly to bounce ideas and information. I have to say that after I read the book I started to utilize LinkedIn (his baby) a lot more than I have done in the past. I am very happy that I have done so.Of course, another central role in the book was to take charge of your career and to CREATE opportunities. The author keeps us into it with different examples of different success stories that have followed these leads and principals. It definitely helped me and I'm sure others, to open their eyes and work harder and seize more in my career. In addition, he taught me how to focus sharply while still being flexible for necessary change. He brings examples at how today's business environment is very different that the previous generations and how we need to be ready for it more than ever.I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to achieve greater heights in business or any other personal project. It is a very easy and enjoyable read and I think that everybody would be able to gain something valuable from it.

About the Author

Thi Bui was born in Vietnam three months before the end of the Vietnam War, and came to the United States in 1978 as part of the “boat people” wave of refugees from Southeast Asia. Her debut graphic memoir, The Best We Could Do (Abrams ComicArts, 2017), has been selected as UCLA’s Common Book for 2017, a National Book Critics Circle finalist in autobiography, an Eisner Award finalist in Reality Based Comics, and made several Best of 2017 book lists, including Bill Gates’s top five picks. Bui is also the Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator of A Different Pond, a picture book by the poet Bao Phi (Capstone, 2017). Her short comics can be found online at the Nib, PEN America, and BOOM California.  She is currently researching and drawing a work of graphic nonfiction about how Asian American Pacific Islanders are impacted by detention and deportation, to be published by One World, Random House. Bui taught high school in New York City and was a founding teacher of Oakland International High School, the first public high school in California for recent immigrants and English learners. Since 2015, she has been a faculty member of the MFA in Comics program at the California College of the Arts. Thi Bui lives in the Bay Area.

I've been looking for more books like this -- books that touch upon the Vietnamese boat refugees. As a refugee, this was a book I could identify with even though our experiences were very different. The art is lovely. The only criticism I had of the book was that it jumped around in time a lot and some of that time jumping was confusing when reading the graphic novel. However, I enjoyed this book very much and wish there were more of it.

I have trouble reading this book because the feelings are very raw and realistic especially with illustrations. It's definitely adult book, not for children or anyone under age of 18. I didn't realize it's more like comic book which I'm not used to read and I have to read very carefully as a lot of hidden meanings and undertone, you really have to look at all the graphics carefully as there are more to it than the words. overall worth owning the book, I would not recommend kindle version.

Over the past few years, I've read a lot of books that were profound, evocative, and embedded themselves in me emotionally (most recently it was "Between the World and Me"). But this book actually made me cry, like ugly-cry. This book is beautifully illustrated (it recalls the style of "Blankets" by Craig Thompson), a bit sparse stylistically for its own effect. It touches on the darkest parts of what it means to survive, not just as an immigrant, but from our own trauma, experienced or passed down to the next generation. It speaks of redemptions, but carefully navigates that line of profundity without overwrought sentimentalism. I would lend this book to everyone if I wasn't afraid of never getting it back.

This was my first graphic novel and I absolutely loved it. I think it meant even more to me because I also am a child of immigrants. While my parents didn't experience the same type of conflict at the time they left their home country, there are things that I think all immigrants and children of immigrants can relate to. This book really spoke to me and even helped me see my own parents in a new way! It's an honest story that is beautifully illustrated, written, and presented. I would 100% recommend this book to anyone and everyone!

A very relatable and powerful book. Any first generation or second generation Asian-American can relate to the authors words and journey. There is a raw beauty in the pain the author manages to convey - this pain of the lives her parents lived through and the pain of her not being able to reach them until she was older. I love the illustrations and the writing was often poetic at times. I read this book in a flat hour and a half, unable to put it down. This book touches anyone who has struggled to realize that their parents are just people too, and that even though they might not always have been the best they always tried the best they could.

How amazing was this?!?! This is the first graphic novel to be about Vietnamese by Vietnamese. Honestly, I have never read a graphic novel. I'm not really that type of genre. This book had me glue to its pages from beginning to end! This book needs to be read! The art is amazing. Easier to read. Does not compromise on any Vietnamese culture for the sake of Western comprehension. It is honest and easy to digest for young adults, too.

As soon as I finished the first scene of The Best We Could Do my lips started to tremble. I knew I was in for it. This book is uniquely evocative of a time, a place and experience that many of us refugees assume is normal. It’s not normal, even if it’s a familiar refugee experience.I’m a new mom, born the same year as the author in Saigon, and we escaped on a boat one year after her family did. This book hit really close to home. Reading about the Vietnamese experience in the form of a comic book strips the experience down to its bare roots. It is a memoir that bounces back and forth between 1) the birth of her son in (minimally); 2) her father's upbringing; 3) her mother's upbringing; and 4) her childhood and the family's experience fleeing Vietnam and coming to America.Ms. Bui was born in 1975 a few months before the fall of Saigon. The family stayed in Vietnam for a few more years and then fled in 1978. The escape had a bunch of false starts and then harrowing moments. The family's early experiences in America were difficult. Ms. Bui has done an excellent job at putting herself in her parents' shoes and being searing in her self-examination.By becoming a parent, she was forced to look at her own parents differently. Her father was often distant, despite being present and her mother pushed them very hard. By going back into her parents' histories, she discovers a much better and deeper understanding of them and why they are they way they are. Hence "the best we could do."Truly outstanding. An amazing immigrant story. If more Americans read this (and books like it), the current xenophobia that is rampant through many communities would diminish.

Dr. Madden provides well needed information and explanations regarding the normalcy of your current emotional ups and downs. Her book is a great resource to point you in the right direction to attempt the journey to healing. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has been betrayed and traumatized by their husband/spouse.

I've tried several and all have a combination of good information and unkind assumptions about the "betrayer" or the mistress. I believe a book could easily be written that has all the good information without creating enemy images out of anyone. Best I have found is "State of Affairs," but hat book is more about giving a context for understand how rampant cheating is and how easy it is to accuse one party or another, but that never provides a holistic solution, nor is it fair. Most affairs are complicated. There are always at least 3 sides to the story. Let's stop pretending that the one who was betrays is the victim. S/he rarely if ever is. Everyone needs to step up. The kind of polarized messaging in this book and the other Post-Infidelity Stress Disorder book I read are likely to continue to create polarization between the two parties which makes family healing post-affair near impossible. I should know. My husband had a baby with another woman when our son was one. My marriage ended. I was devastated. If I didn't get out of my story that he was entirely at fault and I was the victim, we never would have healed. The rest of my life would have been scarred. But instead, I took 100% responsibility for my side (he is yet to do that) and have successfully created a mutually respectful and supportive co-parenting partnership that supports our son's happiness, success and well-being, which reviving his connection to family.

I wish I had read this four months ago right after I found out about my husbands affair. Reading it now has made me feel like I’m not as crazy as I thought. I am going hrough the healing stages and my husband and I are working on things so far going really well but I still have setbacks in my mind and this book made me understand that’s normal.

Exactly what I needed after my husband’s affair. Wonderfully written and now after reading I have a little clarity and feel like I’m not completely insane or crazy. She does a wonderful job in portraying how psychologically your emotions and mind are going through a lot and gives real life examples that help you understand why you feel the way you do or why you have the thoughts you have through it all. Recommended to any woman who is dealing with their husbands affair, emotional or sexual, whether you plan on staying or leaving or just flat or don’t know what to do yet. Wonderful book!

Carolyn's books described what I was feeling perfectly. When I read the "About the author" I saw her practice was 5 min from my house! Needless to say, my husband and I have been seeing her since I read the last page! She's fantastic!

She treats the reader with kindness and compassion as she helps her sort through the pain and trauma that comes after a spouse cheats. The author breaks down the steps to take to keep safe boundaries and also offers insightful perspective on what the cheating partner actually means when he says stupid things from a psychological perspective. This book is a must read for anyone who has been cheated on as she starts to recover from the trauma.

After learning about my husband's infidelity on Valentine's Day of this year I needed something to help me get over the emotional shock. I wasn't eating or sleeping and I felt anxious, fearful, angry, shaky and like I was drowning. This book helped me understand that all that I was feeling was normal. And I loved the section on The Stupid Things He Says and why he says them. My husband said almost every single one, but at least now I know why and what he was trying to say. This book helped me get calm and get the much needed sleep and food that I needed. It gave me hope for the future.

I found out 5 days ago that my husband is cheating when I finally figured out his sign on to his phone. The advice is helpful and I will implement these tips. He has expressed remorse by texts but not to my face, we will see.

Maybe after I buy all 5 pre tests separately I will enjoy this book more. I dont see a pre test bundle for these test as I do most of the others. It was inexpensive for a reason. I would go another route first before buying this one.

Only useful for setting up games. Anything else, it basically just restates the stimulus and then tells you it's right because it's right. It does not break down why the answer is correct from the question stem or question type.

It was ok.

I did not like this because I was mislead thinking that this book contains both the questions and answers as well. It only contains answers. Do not purchase unless you already have access to those tests.
