At last, another story from Kathleen McClure about Fortune. This is the third of them and it is wonderful! Like the first two, it can be read as a stand-alone novel. (I know because I read the second novel first myself.). However, each story deepens one's understanding of the planet and enjoyment of the characters so I think you will want all of them. After all you don't find this quality of writing every day! As I started reading Fortune's Fool, I thought the same thing I always think with the Fortune chronicles. "Why can't more people write like this?" The writing is smooth, the adventure is intriguing, the plot is tight and moves quickly and you won't find better fight scenes anywhere. (Read the author's profile to see why.). The characters are interesting and likeable. The female characters are strong, not a shrinking violet among them. What sets these books apart for me, though, is the author's subtle humor shown through the snarkiness of the characters. (Think about the humor in the "Indiana Jones' movies, and that is what you get here.) With this book, I also realized how much world building has gone on. With my favorite authors, I get a sense of entering a familiar space and again meeting people I like. I had that same feeling with Fortune's Fool, I just sank back and relaxed, smiling as old acquaintances made an appearance.

I enjoyed this book. There was action, jokes, and drama, all mixed together well enough to keep things interesting throughout.

If you've read the previous books from Kathleen, you'll love seeing all the characters again. If not, get ready to meet some neat, quirky and fascinating characters. Gideon is especially great as he is someone who gets into these seemingly impossible situations yet finds a weird and/or unusual way and triumphs. I love that he has a pet draco, which is like a little flying dragon, that perches on his shoulder, works as a lookout and warns him of danger. You'll also love other characters entering - Gideon's old flame Dani, his teenage apprentice Mia and grouchy Tariq with his lovely wife Sameen. Once you pick this book up you won't be able to put it down, it keeps you interested and on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend this story - it is a great read!

What a dilemma!It is one thing for Gideon to undertake looking into various disappearances in Nike but when Gideon is also asked to look for the husband of his erstwhile and still very hot looking love interest, Gideon is somewhat in two minds about that.But, as facilitator the formidable Gideon and his drake is making progress in gaining the respect of the citizens of Nike and Gideon is nothing but professional about it, after all. But, as it turns out, it is also not going to be as easy as he thought. Besides which, it is also decidedly dangerous.However, in this specific book. Fortune's Fool it is young Mia that steals the show and my heart.The relationship between her and Gideon is really fuzzily heartwarming.Kathleen McClure really has a winner in this series of Fortune and I can hardly wait to see what is next in prospect for this duo. Enjoy.

Another rousing adventure on the planet Fortune, hurrah! Many plot strands deftly woven into a swiftly-moving tale that carries the reader along to a satisfying ending. Elvis rules -- sure wish he could come and live with me! Looking forward to the next novel in this series! If you haven't read these yet, what are you waiting for?

I've bought my fair share of this series--and although I am self-taught, after so many years of studying Manga it seemed like everyone kept shoving the same information in my face. 'Amazing Effects' however, blew me away. It is very informative, and explains in great detail about composition, dynamic & panels from creation to perspective and how to use it to create interesting manga.It had examples of 'bad' and 'good' manga. Even if it's not the prettiest style I've ever seen, it gets the point across and is extremly helpful to beginners and intermediate-advanced artists alike, especially if you like me have trouble with perspective! This book has a lot to offer, and was the best find amongst the books I have bought recenlty. I know I will be using it time & time again.Only problem I had with the book:- The book reads left to right,- The manga examples read right to leftAnd there are a few instances where the examples are characters/text who read right to left. So it took me a few reads on certain pages to gain my bearings. But this book is still a great opportunity!

This is very informative book that goes into great detail regarding composition and creating dynamic and interesting panels for your manga! Easy to read with the topics covered mostly in manga story format. It offers lots of examples between non-interesting layout and interesting manga layouts throughout the book. More specifically: composition, character portrayal, voice portrayal, panel design, and manga portrayal.The information in this book about composition of your drawing can translate to when you draw pin-up pictures. Otherwise, this book is for the person interested in perfecting their manga story-telling techniques. There's tons of info in this book. If you've paid attention to whats in this book, I have no doubt you'll be chucking out interestingly laid-out manga in no time.All in all, this book focuses only on creating dynamic and interesting scenes and if you want to learn anything else like toning, this book won't help you. The artwork isn't exactly the prettiest but it's the info the matters. I wouldn't exactly call this edition a keeper book as once you know the info, you can't use the book for anything else even for reference. So I suggest you check it out in the bookstore first and determine if it's for keeps before buying. Otherwise, great info, and a recommended must-read for those who are already familiar with creating their own manga and want to add a little more "oomph".

I have to say this book is definitely one of my favorite HTDM's!It goes over how to create dramatic, fantastic scenes and presentations of your characters, and using every single part of the manga page (the "bleed" of the page, speech balloons, sound effects, angles) and much more to your advantage.It goes over designing the characters a little as well.Definitely a great book, but definitely for people who are skilled artist to begin with.

This is the best walking-around map for orienting a person who is staying in Oslo and going to some of the highlights, the ship museums and the Vigelund sculpture park among others. This time I'm taking the train from the airport into Oslo and this map contains useful information to help me with that adventure as well. It's a very useful, colorful, easy to understand map of a limited-focus area and an excellent value for the money.

Great map. It's very convenient to have this map, even with Google Maps, as phones can act funny, and it shows important places so you can plan your day out without even taking out your phone or laptop. Also, if the phone dies, it is great to have a backup for safety. Especially in Norway where you'll be hiking and walking all day to see all the beauty.It folds up to a tiny little space but really offers quite a large map of the city that any tourist could appreciate. Definitely 5 stars as I used it a lot, and then a friend came into town who took it from me and used it almost exclusively to get around. Nowadays it's great to have something like this so you can leave your phone in your pocket and enjoy life.

Good map, has most streets you need. Nice size. Did rip when wet. Better transportation map (larger, easier to read) available at the visitors center for free, but I used this map a lot to get around by foot during my 4 days in Oslo.

Nice compact map (5 maps actually) of Oslo that folds to the same size as a passport cover. Tiny writing required wearing readers for my aging eyes but all the major attractions are covered. Our hotel had a free map of the city but this was nice to have and easier to manage because of its size.

It was the right size for my purse and helped me get around. What more can you want?

These are great little maps to have when visiting unfamiliar cities so you don't have to always use your phone data to navigate your way.

I read David Rose's Enchanted Objects with great interest. I am a confessed gadget fiend and love trying out all the new devices that people are always making. David Rose provides a good perspective on how to think of gadgets and objects. He starts out by sketching a dystopian world where people are always looking at flat glass slabs, a world he calls terminal world. This is, of course, the world we currently live in. He then provides a more expansive view where one can imagine interacting with objects, not just in the sense of literal computers but more in the sense of things that traditionally are held and touched. He goes through a plethora of interesting objects such as a balance table for promoting conversation, the Lockitron lock and, of course, his Ambient Orb and GlowCaps. (These latter two things he particularly spearheaded.) He talks about a lot of key concepts in thinking about objects such as multimodality (dealing with different senses at the same time), having a shadow digital presence for physical objects in the real world and modularity between components to deal with obsolescence. He also talks a lot about the subtle problems we have in dealing with objects such as the "filter bubble" (where we are essentially just dealing with a virtual world and not the real world) or the uncanny valley (when objects get too lifelike and this seems a bit spooky and it is almost better for them to be stranger).He deals a bit with the issue with privacy and surveillance talking about the cameras in the Innovation Center where he worked. But I could imagine going into a lot more detail on the future world of information storage in the cloud and its privacy implications.In any case, it was a overall a good read and really gave me a lot of valuable thoughts on the physical world of the objects that I love to play with.

This book helps me look at human interface design in a different sense. Decades of experience designing software and control systems have taught me a lot, but David Rose has made some things clear which escaped me. And it's a very readable, enjoyable book! I love it.

I enjoyed this book and have also passed it along to others who had similar sentiments. It's not super deep, but it inspires the reader to open their mind to the possibilities in this domain.

What a delight to read what's technologically available, on the drawing boards, and in the heads of those on the forefront. Rose puts it out there in a fun and enlightening way that's encouraging and very intriguing.

Enchanted Objects uses the Internet of Things as a present day context for facilitating the design of what the author calls Enchanted Objects. Enchanted Objects are things that feed us useful information or simply perform some useful function while being largely blended into our environment (as opposed to being front-and-center like our iPhones). And while the idea of the "Internet of Things" (or certainly the phrase, anyway) is relatively new, the author has been a designer of enchanted objects for a very long time. I'm a product designer myself and quite technologically savvy as well. Still, Enchanted Objects gave me an opportunity to step back and think about the work that I've been doing (and the work I will do in the near future) in a refreshing new context. The book is an easy read, filled with stylized diagrams that I really enjoyed. The Author draws on his own personal experience as a product designer, entrepreneur and professor but also on a large body of knowledge in this field.

Interesting read for the creative and imaginative person. Some neat product mentioned/created is not marketed but tha's OK.

Good Condition. One of the good books to read about technology.

Again, Christie has brought to life a favorite WOW character in an awe inspiring story complete with twists and surprises. The exploration into the human psyche and the subtle interactions and romance bring the reader into the World Of Warcraft. It was at time a bit "sleepy" , but getting through those few ( and not too often ) bits was worth the read.

Every person has different likes and dislikes but for me Christie Golden is the writer I prefer for World of Warcraft lore. She keeps a great line in the development of the characters and the story creating heroes and villians with more than just the clang clang of the weapons and roar of testosterone. With mystery, a tiny touch of romance here and there, some humor and just enough details of the environment that the reader can fill in the blanks and see the story in their mind. Easy to follow the story yet complex. I truly enjoyed the reading.

This is a good book and, to be honest, a surprising one.***SPOILERS***I always thought Jaina was like a rock of virtue, and seeing her fall was shocking. The last half of the novel was truly absorbing.The first half, however, moved rather slowly. Seeing these characters sitting around eating pastries and making jokes seems anathema to the dramatic story Warcraft has to offer, and I didn't quite care for it. Indeed, I understand that this was meant to increase the drama surrounding the death of the gnome and the destruction of Theramore, but it was a little excessive.As always, I recommend this Warcraft book because it was written by Christie Golden, who never fails to deliver.

First of all, let me say that I am a proud World of Warcraft player, but more than that, I am an avid reader and writer/editor. This combination of qualities has led me to read eight or ten novels set in the Warcraft universe over the last few years. Most of these were penned by one of two writers: Richard Knaak and Christie Golden.Of these, I find Golden's novels to be far superior; her characterizations have a depth that makes the reader care deeply about the fate of the central characters.In "Tides Of War," the setting is one that will be familiar to anyone who has played World of Warcraft in the last year or two: Horde Warchief Thrall has stepped down from his leadership post, appointing Garrosh Hellscream in his stead, and withdrawn from any active role in the operations of the Horde. (Where he has gone and what he is up to is covered in Golden's previous book, Thrall: Twilight of the Aspects.)Unfortunately, Thrall's decision to appoint Garrosh as his successor has proven to be a huge error; Garrosh is an overbearing, loutish brute, prone to violent outbursts, self-aggrandizment and grand visions of conquest, with very little regard for the well-being of anyone but himself and his own glory, even the well-being of his own people, the Orcs.The ultimate abomination comes when Garrosh makes the decision to use a terrible weapon in the Horde's conflict with the Alliance. I found myself yelling out loud at the characters, horrified by what was about to happen.If you're a WoW player, this will help you to understand recent in-game events with perfect clarity.

This is the first World of Warcraft book I have ever purchased and I'm glad it was this one that has suckered me in to want to purchase the others. Christie weaves a well woven tale that kept me hooked until I read the last word on the last page. I mean, seriously, I devoured it in a day because I could not walk away and leave it for any length of time it was that good.The last book that had that great of a hold on me was years ago.Why you may ask? Well, her exposition of Jaina was believable, emotionally engaging, and explains why in-game she acts like a blood maddened watch wher. The other characters are tightly woven in and out through Jaina's narrative showing their connections to her and how they came to be in her life. The introduction of Kalecogos gives me hope that perhaps Jaina will not end up like Arthas but he is only a dragon, albeit a wise one; unfortunately madness and wisdom don't always mix well enough to dilute or purge the poison. But the story is left open ended on this, which is fine... gives Blizz and Golden options for a continuation of their story,Bottom line, a book that can keep me captive for hours until I come to the end of the book is well worth the price whether you buy it for your Kindle (as I did) or a hard copy to hold in your hands...at least in my opinion. :)

The Warcraft universe has so much lore that books are almost a requirement to get all the details, even if it does seem like a money-making-only venture. I like Christie Golden's works (Arthas was fantastic), but this one didn't grab me the same way as her others.I can understand (well, imagine at least) that the horrors of war are truly horrors. And I've been fortunate to avoid experiencing them. But (SPOILER ALERT)... Jaina's 'transformation' to her rage-filled, vengeful persona didn't feel like it was natural in this setting. I can see what she was shooting for, but the language didn't pull me into her rage as I'd hoped. And as such, this book felt a little more forced to me.That said, I still enjoyed it, and it's a great way to add to the lore in the game. I'm looking forward to "War Crimes" also by Golden in 2014. I think from what I've read about it that it'll be a dark tale that touches on many painful realities of war.
