If I could give this 6 stars, I would. This book follows the story of Creation to teach young children about opposites; however, it draws from scripture throughout the Bible to tell the story - instead of relying on only the Genesis account. The illustrations are BEAUTIFUL! And the scripture passages match each idea so well. I think the author did a great job of selecting the scripture passages, such that it creates a bit of a worship experience. I can't help but think about how wonderful God is to have created such a beautiful world.

When I received my book I immediately knew there was something wrong with it because I picked it up and it went lopsided like someone had already broke the spine. When I opened it, it turns out there’s just a whole spread in the middle that is blank. And those two pages don’t connect so it opens like it’s broken right in the middle where that blank spread is. I’m assuming this isn’t supposed to be how it was made and wondering if everybody had that problem or if I just got a weird copy? It makes the book awkward to hold and read. Bummed that it came this way.

I have a passion for Persian carpets yet I never imagined I could find a way to capture a bit of this art by making something myself. The designs in the books are lush and inspiring- each one a jewel box of oriental carpet design. The directions look fairly easy to follow though I have to confess I don't know how to needlepoint....Yet! Readers of this book may also want to check out the second needlepoint book I purchased with this one: "Tribal Design s for Needlepoint" by Gay Ann Rogers.

This is an incredible labor of love on the part of the author and it is gracious of him to share his work for our enrichment and enjoyment. The intricate designs of the rugs the author has chosen to reproduce are painstakingly charted and he has made careful notes of any small changes in color or a minor change in a detail. The charts are easy to follow, needless to say. (I'm using them for something other than needlepoint.) Also, the descriptions of the rugs the designs were taken from, the meaning of some of the design elements, the regions they were made, and stylistic differences between regions were really well written and interesting, so it was like a crash course in oriental rugs as well. Fascinating.

If you love oriental carpets and do any knitting, weaving ,or needlepoint this is a great source book. Mr Campbell charts out each carpet so you can design on any scale from minii to full size carpet. Beautiful and important work

I once had this book and somehow lost it. I made a few designs in then and found them difficult enough to hold my interest. I want to make some mousepads for christmas gifts from the patterns and I remembered that they are easily altered because of the repeated motifs. I was delighted to find it in great condition and signed by the author/artist.

I couldn't resist this book! I love oriental carpets, but of course they're expensive and require a lot of space. This way I can have the designs I love, in miniature. The rugs he chose are lovely, and the designs easy to follow, plus he provides the color numbers for the yarn if you want to use his colors. (This is particularly nice if you live overseas like I do and need to order the yarn.) I would have liked some hints on how to come up with designs for other rugs, but it's easy to figure out by looking at his designs. The book is obviously for a niche market, but if you like oriental carpets and needlepoint, I doubt there's anything out there quite like this.

What a fantastic book. It is exactly what I require. All of the patterns are copies of the genuine article. I am having trouble deciding on which one to make.

The charts could be easier. The black squares made it dificult to read but great designs

Can't wait for snow to fly and me schedule settles down so I came start this winter's project. Easy to read and follow.

This is a fascinating book. I purchased it after becoming interested in the subject after reading Dr. Robert Weinberg's popular book "The Biology of Cancer". To my pleasant surprise, "Gene Control" was the perfect compliment to that book. More than just a book about epigenetics, "Gene Control" is an extremely well written book, easy to read, and deals in depth with a wide array of topics regarding DNA, RNA, protein, and their control mechanisms. The illustrations are simple but very effective. It could easily be titled "Mysteries of the Nucleus Revealed". I highly recommend this very interesting and current book.

A very comprehensive treatment of the exceptionally complex "world" of gene regulation. Latchman organizes the text as well as can be expected given the involved molecular dynamics, but the student will have a difficult time keeping up. I liked the premise of this book, a group of soon-to-retire witches must find their replacements to pass on their magic and spell book. Things go awry when Olivia is murdered. Not only murdered but their spell book was stolen.Molly (married to a non-magical policeman,) and Elsie are left with their sorrow as well as dealing with still sourcing out new witches. Who murdered Olivia, a witch or a non-witch and why? I mean these witches are not special but are slowly losing their abilities when the years passing.A nice cozy read.

I don't think I am a mean-spirited person, but for the life of me I cannot fathom where the 4 & 5 star reviews are coming from. I have not read this author team before, so I can't compare it with other books they have written. The premise here that witches become seniors with erratic powers seemed amusing but I had to force myself to finish the book. There was no meaningful character development & I have to admit I could not feel empathy for any of them. They were like cardboard cut-outs who needed minders. The young witch, Dorothy, was positively insipid. She was an insult to librarians everywhere. Secondary characters popped in and out of nowhere with little explanation or motivation for their actions. The plot was disjointed and silly, with some actions brutish and others vulgar. It aimed for whimsy but just ended up leaving a very bad taste behind.

This book just didn't work for me. I never connected with the characters and found them rather silly and not in a fun way but in a I'm rolling my eyes way. They were very immature and some of the scenes (like selling tickets to poke the witch) were just ridiculous. I had hoped the mystery would save this book but I didn't find it well written. Throughout the mystery we are given some obvious red herrings but when you get to the final part of the book the culprit was someone that had no real motive or involvement in the previous part of the book. I want a few hints along the way in my mysteries so that I at least stand a chance of figuring it out. What I don't want is the villain dumped in my lap with a motive manufactured in the last few pages just to wrap things up.I also felt the pacing was off and the middle of the story bored me as the witches ran around following clues that led them nowhere. So while some may like this it wasn't my cup of tea.

Three older witches are trying to find replacements so they can retire. Unfortunately one of them is murdered and the other two try to find the murderer.I really enjoyed this book. I liked the quirkiness of the characters. I liked that they were not young but my age and older. As I got to know them and the world in which they live, I got into the story. I kept thinking other people outside of who Molly and Elsie believed. When the murderer is finally revealed I was shocked. Not what I expected.This is a quick read but so satisfying. I look forward to more in this series.

If you’re in the mood for a comic one, *Spell Booked* is a very good choice! The characters are vivid and down-to-earth, their setting is rich with detail, the plot complicated. I giggled at the interactions among the core trio of witches, especially after one of them . . . changes, and I enjoyed the flashes of deeper feeling that arose from the storyline.The story opens in Wilmington, North Carolina, with a coven of witches who are getting up in years and want to retire. But they can’t do so until they recruit new witches to take their place. (Why this should be so is not really spelled out.) Their efforts in this direction are interrupted by murder, break-ins, thefts, and other mayhem. Although the husband of the central character is a police detective and the police are trying to investigate these crimes, most of the detecting has to be done by the witches, because regular humans are not supposed to know about witchly matters.The Wilmington setting is described, but not with a specificity that would have made me feel I was there (could have been more atmospherics to make the setting seem less generic). There also could have been a little more backstory; despite the fact that this is the first novel in the Retired Witches series, we seem to be pitched into the middle of an ongoing situation right at the beginning, and it took me a while to get on board. Because it is part of a series, there are also some threads left dangling at the end. But the core story had a satisfying arc and there was enough resolution that you don’t feel tricked into buying the next one right away! You may want to, though, if you develop as much affection for the characters as I did.

They are trying to recruit some younger witches to take their place in their Curio shop so that they can retire. They have their eye on the local librarian in town, when they find out that Olivia has been murdered!Molly's husband is a cop and received the call about Olivia's death! There is only one thing that Molly does not share with her husband, Joe, that she is a witch! Also that her friends are witches too!The book is way cool as the two remaining friends with some help try to find out who killed Olivia! The book kept my interest until the very end with many concepts about air witches, water witches and spell books, some werewolves were thrown in to round out the paranormal experience!I enjoyed the experience and wished that both authors were still living so they could still be writing such great books!I cannot wait for our book discussion on Facebook on this book, it should be a good one!

One of those young Americans was John Bradley, a Navy corpsman who a few days before had braved enemy mortar and machine-gun fire to administer first aid to a wounded Marine and then drag him to safety. Bradley's father, John, was one of the six. In this voluminous and memorable work of popular history mixed with memoir, Bradley and Powers (White Town Drowsing) reconstruct those Marines' experiences, and those of their Pacific Theater comrades. The authors begin with the six soldiers' childhoods. Soon enough, bombs have fallen on Pearl Harbor, and by May '43 the young men have become proud leathernecks. Bradley and Powers incorporate accounts of specific battles, like "Hellzapoppin Ridge" (Bougainville, December '43), and pull in corps life and lore, from the tough-minded to the slightly silly, from mandatory penis inspections (medics checking for VD) to life in the pitch-dark of "Tent City No. 1." And they cover the strategy and tactics leading up to the awful battle for the islandAthe navy's disputed plans for offshore bombardment, cut at the last minute from 10 days to three; the 16 miles of Japanese underground tunnels, far more than Allied intelligence expected. They were immortalized in a single second, when a photographer snapped a picture that would become The Photograph, the most reproduced photo of the last century. This is the story of those young men, all of them working class, all of them struggling to fight a war. Three of them survived to come home, where they were dined and honored and where they struggled to forget the awful images of Iwo Jima. John Bradley, for instance, remembered the corpse of Iggy, his best friend who had been horribly tortured by the Japanese. This is the story not only of the battle of Iwo Jima and The Photograph that made these men famous; it is also about their lives before the war; it is the story of the three survivors and what happened to them after they left the battlefields. The survivors themselves said the real heroes were those who didn’t come back from Iwo Jima. But one must not forget that there were like so many other men who were not as well known or immortalized on film and in bronze. These six men in The Photograph became the image of the war; their valor was what we wanted to see, not the unbearable bloodshed. Ira Hayes is the best known survivor, but he is known as much for his dark side as for his heroism. Hayes made the headlines for his drunkenness and his arrest record before and after the war. This was a sad end for a brave Marine. I am glad Bradley wrote so well about his father and his father’s comrades.

James Bradley is the son of one of the six men identified in perhaps the most memorable photos to emerge from World War II. John Bradley, a Navy corpsman who was among the thousands of Marines who made landfall at Iwo Jima in February 1945, participated in the flag raising atop Mount Suribachi on Feb. 19, 1945. His son James profiled each of the six men in that flagraising. He not only tells the reader about how each of the men came to be among the Marines on Iwo Jima, but describes how they performed during the battle that lasted 31 days and claimed thousands of casualties on both sides.The author also talks about the lives of the three surviving fundraisers after the battle, including his father. He focuses on how each man dealt with the demands of their celebrity as well as the horrors that lived within each of their memories of Iwo Jima.As a personal note, I chose to read "Flags of Our Fathers" because my father, a 22-year Navy man, fought in the South Pacific during WW II. This book brought home a much greater understanding of the perils and tragedy of war.

While I am very glad that I took the time to read this book, I must admit that it took me quite awhile to get through it as I found it to be incredibly difficult emotionally to deal with. I have read much about WW2 history these past 15 or so years and so am not a stranger to the horrible conditions under which so many many people worked and lived but realizing that the majority of these young men were really just boys was heartbreaking for me as I have 3 sons and know that in another place and time that could have been any or all of them in those situations. My father was a WW2 vet who died at age 91 about 1 1/2 years ago. I learned a lot from him as he loved to talk about his days in the eighth Air Force. I don’t think you will regret investing the time into this book but just be prepared for a reality check. Like Doc in the story my father returned home went to college on the GI bill married my mother and became a funeral director. He worked at this profession until mere months before his death and truly enjoyed his work and those he provided care and comfort too. Perhaps that is another reason why this book was rather tough for me to get through. All in all worth the struggle.

Six young Americans, who were immortalized in a photo of the raising of the flag, are forever remembered in their family and hometown contexts, including a history of Arizona's Pima Indians. Sometimes in the same paragraph, Bradley refers to his father as "Doc," sometimes as "my father." Since his father wouldn't talk about Iwo when he was alive, his son was compelled to learn all he could after John Bradley died. A remarkable story that must not be forgotten.

This is such a cute story! I would highly recommend Splat the Cat series to anyone. My students absolute LOVE it!!! This book was delivered in perfect condition and I will be purchasing more products from this company in the future.
