First with full disclosure: I hate whiney. I don't care if it's an Adele song, a Hallmark movie or a book. I hate whiney. While waiting for my routine authors to get another book out - we've all been there, right - I decided to try Kendra Elliot. Started with the Mercey Kilpatrick books - love those. Then when I read those, I moved to the Kendra Elliot Callahan & McLane. First book was good. Second book was good. But now I've finished - just barely - the 3rd book. Seriously, how many times is one FBI agent's life endangered with injury? Hey, Kendra! Not realistic and tiring to the reader. If this character is the great FBI agent everyone claims, why does she end up in so many female traps; next I suspect she will be tied to the train tracks.And then there is her twin sister who is as insane as Ava is supposedly sane. I say "supposedly" because I'd like to slap Ava and tell her she is just like her sister, just not so obvious. And no, Ava isn't the junkie Jayne is, but there are other types of addiction. Like being whiney. Oh woe is me. I found myself skipping the whiney parts of the book which included Jayne mostly. I don't care about Jayne as a character - she's a life-sucker (time waster for the reader) and this character will end up killing this series of books. And another things that is not realistic - if a superior was aware of the emotional illness of one of his agents, he or she would not be sporting a gun and badge. And everyone knows!I gave this book 3 stars rather than 2 because the first 2 books were solid, good reading. This one, not so much. But you'll probably see it on Lifetime or Hallmark one day. They love whiney!

I was disappointed in the this read. this book was more about Ava and her issues than a suspense book. The plot was inconsistent and was not believable. The ending left you hanging and the entire book read as if the author just threw something together.I was disappointed in this read.the

What a disappointing read! I read the first two books in this series so, naturally, I continued with this one. The author has written another book with the same formula (goes back and forth between the heroes' and the villain's perspectives.) This particular book was a mish-mash of repetitive prose; Ava Callahan's story line was beyond reason. How many times were we told that her twin sister Jayne is a train-wreck but Ava agonized about stepping back and letting Jayne take responsibility for herself? Too many! At first, Ava was introduced as a competent, confident and intelligent FBI agent. All of those qualities fell away in this story. Ava was presented as someone who needed to be saved (several times!) right to the end of the book. Her lover, Mason McLane, was eager to accommodate but, frankly, I felt that Ava's fearfulness and indecisiveness were over the top considering her training, etc. I am certainly not eager to read Callahan & McLane Book 4; it was an effort to finish #3.

I've chosen to listen to Ms. Elliot's stories so I can get things done around the house. The narrators of this story, male and female, were really good. I didn't like it when a male reader attempts to sound female, their voice is always too airy. But in this book, the various voices were done well, making the tension more tense, which I enjoyed a lot.This story was the most emotional one of the ones I've read recently.I am feeling such stress for Ava, wondering how she's going to balance her life, knowing Jayne is always going to be a part of it. She's like an anchor pulling Ava down. Mason is so heroic, even when he's stymied about how to help. Or should I say he's especially heroic because he doesn't try to fix Ava's life or Ava, herself (who needs no fixing).Travis was an excellent antagonist, with an acute mind. I love what he did with the Starbucks scene. It showcased his intelligence.Really good book. So far haven't been disappointed.

I read A LOT of mystery/suspense/thriller books. I am used to plot twists (but, hopefully, not burned out). This one had me going from the first page. What the heck was going on? Well, Mason and Ava and Ray and Zander were in great form throughout with their usual intelligence and determination and honor and integrity. Just have to love them. This time around young men were mass killing people publicly and Oregon was reeling. Adding to the confusion as a secondary plot, Ava's twin had a mega meltdown which, again, threw Ava into a mind spin. However with Kendra Elliot's ability to draw all these pieces together, it was a rousing story of suspense and tension and a twisted mind and, and, and. Phew! Excellent read at any time (maybe not late at night).

I liked it. It was interesting from beginning to end with no TSTL moments. I love the H and h but I did feel like Ava was a hot mess in this book. I'm not saying I blame her. She's been through a lot, but still. . . . In my opinion I feel like the mentally unstable sister got to much page time for this length of a book. I would have rather read about her being with Mason since they really weren't together that much in the book.Just a pet peeve- there is a women in this book that is described as really beautiful, gorgeous, whatever. The hero, Mason talked about how tongue tied he gets when he is in her presence. I really don't care to hear about how a hero is so enthralled by a women, who is not the heroine, that he can hardly talk, when I'm reading a book. It was a small part of the book. It might not bother others, but it's not romantic. And it is a romantic suspense book.Romance - 2 starsMystery/action - 5 stars

Interesting, thorough, and thoughtful history of the Jewish People, particularly because the author is not Jewish. Johnson starts his story by calling the Jews the " most tenaceous people in history." He ascribes to the Jews the "willingness to ask the difficult question", a major reason Christian dogma bogs down, according to the author.I have a point of disagreement with the author. He describes in Jesus' life a point where Jesus "stopped being a Jew". I disagree. Jesus never stopped considering himself a Jew. This thinking occurred well after his death, and is something many educated Christians reject. They acknowledge Jesus' Jewishness.

I read reviews on other books on the history of the Jews before selecting this book. This book may be like reading a college textbook, but as Paul Johnson tells, the Jewish race is the only race who has a written record that goes back to first recorded time. Johnson had written an excellent history of God and His chosen people. This ancient religious race as the author relates has spent much of her time in captivity, emancipation, ghetto, or the holocaust, yet never has lost its language, rituals, and rabbinical traditions. Yet, even today the Jews are despised and hated and Muslims wants to annihilate them. It would do these people well to learn Jewish history as well as the Bible.

Where else can you find the complete history of the Jewish people? I have be interested in the Jewish people for years and finally pulled the trigger and downloaded this book to my Kindle. It is definitely an academic read. (Many of the words I didn't know the Webster dictionary didn't have!) It is slow go and easy to get lost as I am not familiar with the old testament. Nonetheless, a fascinating read. Next I want to read Mr. Johnson's take on the American people.

This is a very good book by Paul Johnson. It gives a great history and background on the Jews and gave me the knowledge I needed.

And I usually preface my remarks with the advice that if one has not embraced the Hebrew Scriptures, one does not know Christ. Jesus was a Jew till he drew his last tortured breath [not a "marginal Jew," pace John Meier.] However, having read Paul Johnson's sweeping history of Judaism, I would go one step further and say that whatever one's faith, even in the absence of faith, we cannot understand the human experience without a long and reflective immersion into the historical experience of the children of Abraham.There were 2.2 billion Christians and 1.6 billion Muslims worldwide as of 2010. Jews number 13.5 million at this juncture, but a major thesis of this work is precisely that what has always been a tiny religious community numerically has exerted influence far beyond its numbers. One reason, of course, is that all three traditions look to Abraham as a type of father in faith. A more nuanced reason is that the identities of Christianity and Islam have been [and continue to be] shaped by Jewish example, in ways that both are reluctant to acknowledge and have at times actually fought to suppress.Johnson explains the demographics of the Middle East that produced Abraham, a historical being whose unique insight into the all powerful and single nature of one supreme deity begot the dominant structure of faith for much of the world. His brief analysis of the Hebrew Scripture canon is brilliant, and he underscores two critical points usually overlooked. The first is his observation that the "Diaspora" or scattering of the Jews began much earlier than the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 C.E. It began, in fact, in 538 B.C.E when Cyrus released the Jews from the Babylonian captivity. Not everyone went home, and many went elsewhere to cultivate a synagogue model of faith life instead of the temple/priesthood.Why this division? The answer rests in Johnson's analysis of Isaiah, specifically the third portion or "Trito-Isaiah" written during and after the Babylonian exile. Isaiah, in this treatment, becomes the father of the modern individual conscience. Practically speaking, Trito-Isaiah marked the end of kingly political identity and priestly power. The observance of the Torah or Law was no longer "everybody's responsibility" but became "my responsibility." Such a theology inspired "The Suffering Servant" [Isaiah 53] and the consequent belief that exemplary holiness and humility was Israel's gift toward which the world would eventually come and receive. [Isaiah 60, proclaimed in Christian Churches on the Feast of the Epiphany]The destruction of Jerusalem finally rendered the Jewish people to a state of absolute homelessness that in many ways survives to this day. As people of the Book, Jews maintained throughout their history a religious cosmology that made isolation a virtue as they maintained small community/synagogue based life around much of the known world. Pagans, as a rule, saw Jewish separateness as a type of snobbery that invited antagonism. The enmity of Christians was of a different sort, the hatred of men for those who were who were once dear brothers and shared a common faith bloodline.Johnson observes that Jews have had to live at the whim or mercy of local or regional governments, which of necessity facilitated the skill of accommodation and the ability to transfer belongings quickly in the face of persecution and exile, often in the form of jewelry, precious metals, and later in cash and commodities; hence the association of Jews with "money changing." Thus the genesis of slurs of dissembling and money-lending took root, among countless others. Always a numerical and religious minority, and cursed in the Christian scriptures, so to speak, Jews became convenient scapegoats during times of plagues and disasters. With the notable exception of England, and later the American colonies, life for Jews was hard and demeaning. Johnson traces the development of the Jewish ghetto, the extreme segregation from Christian life in Europe's major cities.Given its reverence of sacred books and orthodox commentary, Judaism was for much of its history unscientific and did not seek major philosophical exchanges with its neighbors. Only Moses Maimonides [1135-1204] attempted to engage Judaism in any sort of extracurricular dialogue. This isolation would be harder to maintain with the advent of the Enlightenment, which prompted the one true schism of Jewish theology: the struggle to maintain historical continuity and purity [the Orthodox way] versus the logic of dialogue and expansive exchange with the modern world [the Reformed way]. The eruption of Jewish genius into modern day business [e.g., the House of Rothschild] and scholarship [Leibniz, Marx, Freud, Einstein] was a mixed blessing for Jews, as anti-Semitic paranoia over supposed Jewish dominance fueled the European atmosphere for the horror of Hitler's Final Solution.Despite his professional objectivity, Johnson himself marvels at the depth of personal faith in the countless victims of Nazi death camps. They died, he reports, in the confidence that their grim fates were in some mysterious way God's plan for his chosen ones to become that "light to the nations" proclaimed in Isaiah 60. The post-War response of intensified Zionism and the establishment of modern day Israel have created new sufferings for the Jewish conscience. Having lived for over two millennia as suffering servants, the demands of statehood and national security--including responsibility for an atomic arsenal--have sorely tested Isaiah's vision of faith with the previously discarded Davidic-Solomon paradigm of strength.It is most unfortunate that present Arab-Israeli political conflicts have distracted outsiders from the majestic history of Jewish faith. In a curious way Jews have lived what Christians profess: Christ's model of the Suffering Servant bearing the sins of the world. Is it this embarrassing fact that has poisoned Christianity to the degree that as late as the 1960's the Catholic liturgy referred to Jews as "perfidious?" Is Christian-Jewish dialogue today a matter of redressing old wrongs, or a matter of Christianity finding itself?

My daughter's 3rd grade class is doing a Living Museum, and each child had to pick a 'Who Was' book to report on for it. My daughter chose Anne Frank, and I was initially nervous about how age appropriate the content would be. I read the book along with her, prepared for questions and concerns that would arise,. I was so pleased how well it was written and adapted for young students. I think it is perfect for 3rd and 4th graders, but think it might be a bit short on history for 5th grade and up. It's definitely a great book to introduce children to learning about WWII. We will be purchasing more 'Who Was' books in the future!

I’ve been buying these books for my son and I love every single one. Most of the books on the series is less than 100 pages so it makes for a quick and easy read. I read a few chapters to him at bedtime and it’s something we both look forward to. Especially me for the cuddle time with my son as I know he won’t always want me to read to him.The story of Anne Frank is unbelievable. To try and picture yourself living in those horrible and horrific times especially as a parent is heartbreaking. There were pages I couldn’t read without crying. The story is tastefully written as not to scare young readers but at the same time giving them the startling truth about evil in the world.Since reading this book I am going to buy the whole story of Anne Frank.

I love these books! I am a 3rd grade teacher. I was trying to find some biography books for my students and I stumbled across these on Amazon. I bought nine different books and I'm so glad that I did! Most of these books are on a late 3rd to 4th grade reading level, which makes them perfect for my advanced readers. I teach in a diverse school, and some of my students are very interested in learning about African American people in history. So I got several books about African Americans to interest those students. It was great to see the light in their eyes while reading these books! I love finding books that make my students love reading. I'll definitely be buying more of these in the near future! 😊

My 9yr old daughter chose this as her summer reading and loved it. I was worried about introducing this awful time in history and had her read the book aloud so we could discuss it as she read. It was carefully written with young readers in mind. It takes you through her life story in a very sensitive manner. It allows the reader to understand the hardships she went through, without being too graphic.

Of course Anne Frank's story ends sadly, so I can't say my middle schoolers enjoyed the book, exactly, but they were definitely engaged and appreciated the writing style. They learned a lot and were curious to learn more about Anne Frank. I used this book as part of a WWII unit study and even though the text would be fine for elementary readers, the details are interesting enough to get middle schoolers' attention as well. (BTW, I highly recommend the Anne Frank house website as a companion to any study of Anne Frank. You can take a virtual tour of the "Secret Annex.") So far, my kids have enjoyed every book from this series that we've read.

We were covering American history this year (homeschooling family) and I was apprehensive about the subject of the Holocaust as our eldest was only 6.5 but this book was a perfect introduction. It is honest and we'll written without being overly graphic or inappropriate for younger readers. We used it as a read aloud so that we could address any questions or concerns and we will use it again with our other children as they get older

Yes! Very good and yes it leave's gaps. However those gaps open doors to a child's mind to ask more and research more. Honestly perfect !

We really enjoy this series and we recently added this one to our collection. I really enjoy them and it's a nice way to introduce kids to history and written in easy to understand ways. Really suggest this series and we own several. Our kids started this series in elementary school.

I bought this book because I wanted to learn to make the 3D poinsettia flowers but what I really like is how it shows you how to use the same ideas in more than one way. For instance the placemats can be turned into table runners, and the poinsettia pattern can also make sunflowers. There are fold out instructions pages, and detailed sewing instructions. I love the coaster ideas and even an inexperienced sewer could easily make them; the table runner on the cover would be a project for a more experienced one so there is definitely a range of interesting projects included in this pattern book.

Love this book, already started making some and have bought material for more. Shipment was quick and everything arrived within a week, and everything in good condition. I highly suggest this book.
